Lake Taghkanic

Less than an hour from Albany, the Lake Taghkanic State Park in Ancram is a pawtastic location to retreat to nature with your four-legged pal. Comprising almost 1,600 acres of rolling hills and lush forests in the Hudson Valley, this furrific state park is a dream destination for any outdoor-loving pup!

Some of the amenities at Lake Taghkanic include two beaches, boat launch sites, picnic areas, and athletic fields. You'll have to steer clear of these spots if Fido's tagging along, though, as they are off-limits to canine guests. Dogs are only allowed in the parking lots, roadways, marked trails, and campsites at Lake Taghkanic. The good news is, there are over 10 miles of trails for curious puppers to explore, including the 5-mile Lakeview Trail. This path loops around the entire lake, featuring a wide assortment of flora and fauna, as well as scenic viewing points. For a shorter hike, check out the Fitness Trail. Spanning nearly 2 miles, this loop has a grassy surface and overlook at the top where you and Fido can see pawsome views of the lake, Taconic Hills, and the Catskill Mountains. 

Whichever routes you take, don't furget to clean up after your pup. Bring clean-up bags, and water with you. Reconnect with nature as you and your dog hike among Appalachian oak, hickory, hemlock, cedar, spruce, and other trees. See if you can spot some of the wildlife that call the state park home, including deer, rabbits, coyotes, raccoons, and squirrels.

If you'd like to extend your adventure, pitch your tent or park your trailer in the spacious camping area. Up to two pups are allowed per campsite, but note that pets are not permitted in the cabins and cottages. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, so be sure to fill your cooler with your favorite camping food and drinks!
