Description

All dogs in Newton know where the fun is- at the Cold Spring Park! This puptastic 67-acre stretch of fields and forest is nestled amongst cozy homes, and features everything you and your pup could want. Two baseball fields, a tennis court, picnic facilities and a large playground attract many local residents, and with lots of open and wooded land to walk through, it's also a hiker's paradise.

But the true gem of this green space can be found in the southern section of the park, often referred to as 'Old Cold Spring Park,' where Atlas studios filmed silent movies in the 1910s and 1920s. Right where westerns were played out, an open field remains where your dog can run and play.

While your dog does need a leash to enjoy all other areas of the park, in this clearing, your dog can ditch the leash. This natural dog park is only partially fenced, so be sure your furbaby is good under voice control before they get unhitched. With lots of space to run, and partly ringed with trees, your dog will be in pupperdise! Other than a picnic table and some occasional plastic chairs, there's not many amenities, but the park more than makes up for it in location, as this spot is far from any main streets or play areas for humans, and offers soft grass for puppy paws. Clean-up bags are located at the entrance, so always be sure to promptly pick up after your pooch.

The City of Newton does have a few restrictions for pups who want to play off-leash. All dogs should be licensed and and have current vaccinations, with appropriate tags on their collars. In addition, you'll need to purchase a permit which runs $50 for residents, and $100 for non-residents. You'll need proof of license and a rabies vaccination, and will receive a medallion which your dog should wear when visiting the off-leash area. The city also recommends that those enjoying the dog park use the main Beacon Street entrance, though there are other access points around the park. The off-leash field can be found near the Lifecourse Trail which features exercise equipment for humans.

Once your pup has had enough of the dog park, clip the leash back on to explore the various trails through the forest and along creeks for a truly furbulous adventure! No bones about it, you and your pup will love an afternoon in the Cold Spring Park!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
