Old Cold Spring Dog Park in Newton, Massachusetts, is across the street from the New Cold Spring Park. The Old Cold Spring Park is larger, over 65 acres, and is much more natural. New Cold Spring Park has a freshly paved parking lot, two baseball fields, a tennis court, picnic facilities and a large playground.
Old Cold Spring Park is wooded, with both paved and dirt trails, and a large dog park that is only partially fenced. The Old Cold Spring Dog Park is a large, nearly two acres, clearing in thick woods. The park is fenced only on three sides. The fourth side has thick brush and trees that serve as a natural barrier, but a determined dog could get past it.
One of the paved paths is quite close to the unfenced portion of the park, so bear that in mind if your fur buddy is people crazy. The dog park is covered in grass, which can be a bit muddy at certain times of the year. There's a water fountain for both dogs and people at the main entrance to the dog park.
The water fountain is turned off during the cold months of the year, so as to prevent broken pipes, so people are advised to bring their own water and dog bowls. There are poop bags as well, but aside from a picnic table, there's not a lot of seating. The park is quite minimal, without any shelters or agility equipment for the dogs.
However, there is exercise equipment for people along the trail in the woods. You and your dog are welcome along the trails, but your dog will need to be leashed. Newton is a close suburb of Boston, only seven miles from downtown. But the wooded land definitely gives the park a more rural feeling. There is a farmer's market across the street, and an old cemetery, dating back to the 18th century, giving the park a very New England feeling.
