Passyunk Square Dog Park

Philadelphia is packed with things to do and sights to see. Passyunk Square, located a few miles south of the main downtown area, is filled with local eateries and hangouts. If you and your dog find yourselves walking in this area, it also offers an off-leash dog park where your dog can run into other dogs and get out some pent-up energy from a day of wandering throughout the city. 

Although Passyunk is the name of the area, locals refer to the area’s park as Columbus Square, and while you are in the area, you may hear both. The condensed park offers a baseball field and playground for children, as well as the dog park where your dog can run off-leash. The entire area is gravel, which some people find to be too hard on their dog’s feet. 

A few picnic benches offer a bit of respite if you happen to be tired from walking around all day, but there are no restrooms nearby, and you will need to carry drinking water, as none is provided at the park. The park no longer offers the stumps that once made it a unique dog park for dogs to play in. The City of Philadelphia maintains and governs the park, and it is free for all to use. 

Renovations to the park have been in the works for years, but little has been done to improve the grounds overall. Locals love to frequent the spot anyway and report that during busy hours, you can expect to find a ton of friendly locals chatting and letting their dogs socialize. If you and your dog are on the shy side, you might want to avoid the crowded area during rush hour. 

Otherwise, you can enjoy your time talking to locals and keeping an eye on your dog, which is required by the posted rules on site. If you visit the Passyunk Square Dog Park, be sure to bring your own poop bags and pick up after your dog! Locals report that this is a problem in an otherwise enjoyable park, so do your part to keep it clean when you visit.
