The Petersburg National Battlefield is located in Southeast Virginia near the city of Petersburg, Virginia. The park is comprised of three main units and a management component making up four main areas including Eastern Front Visitor Center and Park Tour Road, Five Forks Battlefield, City Point Unit, and Poplar Grove National Cemetery.Â
The total area that encompasses the National Battlefield is approximately 2,670 acres of land, of which 8.7 acres includes the cemetery area. To access the park, there are several routes you can use depending on where you specifically want to go. The Five Forks Battlefield can be located at the intersection of VA 613 and VA 627. This area is about 25 miles southwest of the visitor center, which is in turn just off VA 36 and east of Petersburg, Virginia.Â
The visitor center is the primary unit in Petersburg National Battlefield. The third main area that you can access is the City Point Unit can be found in the Hopewell City. This area can be located in the visitor center using VA 10 from VA 36 and VA156. The Petersburg National Battlefield was previously recognized and established as a national military park on July 3, 1926, and was later on redesignated August 24, 1962.Â
The park is managed by the National Park Service and is recognized by the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The National Battlefield commemorates events related to the American Civil War Siege of Petersburg between 1864 and 1865 with the central focus being the battles in the city of Petersburg, and Hopewell, Virginia.Â
Besides the historical significance and living history programs at the park, there are several other activities that you could enjoy including horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, and auto tours. You are welcome to bring your pooch, but you will need to ensure that you maintain immediate control of your dog at all times.Â
More specifically, you must keep your dog on a six-foot leash at all times and ensure that you keep your dog in a secure enclosure when not leashed while visiting the Petersburg National Battlefield. Additionally, you must ensure that you immediately clean up after your dog.
