If your canine likes to bark at cars or strange people, this will not likely be the best place for you to bring them. The park itself is mulched with a beautiful rod iron fence surrounding it. There are a lot of homeless in this portion of the downtown area which has gotten this park the reviews of sketchy, but the park remains well lit at night, and you're visible to surrounding people and buildings.
The size of this park is quite large for a typical dog park located in a downtown area. There is enough space in the dog park portion of the park to play long range games like fetch. It is just large enough that your canine will stay within eyesight at all times without having to chase them around.
There is water available at this park but bring your dog bowl as none are available for you. Dog bags and trash receptacles are available in several places around the park. Outside of the fenced off-leash area are grass and some walking trails. Your canine is allowed on these trails and grass provided they stay on a leash at all times.
At Pioneer Park Off-Leash Area there are enough trails for you and your canine to get in a pleasant walk and wear yourself out just going around the park a few times. Plenty of trees provide a great deal of shade with a high canopy. It makes for a beautiful little slice of downtown Salt Lake City.
