Description

Poquessing Creek flows for about 10 miles through Northeast Philadelphia's neighborhoods of Parkwood, Millbrook and Mechanicsville. Along the creek, you can find two parts of the Poquessing Creek Park, also referred to as the Poquessing Valley Park. These are 2 separate areas, but locals tend to call them both "Poquessing Park." Together, they bookend the 500-acre Benjamin Rush State Park and connect it to the Junod Playground.

Poquessing Creek Park on the northern side of Benjamin Rush Park is a linear green space that boasts the constant company of the burbling creek, which can provide a refreshing break during your outing. Please remember to treat any drinking water you take from the creek. On the south side of Benjamin Rush is the other Poquessing Creek Park, home to the Poquessing Creek Trail, a 1.5-mile connector between the playground and Rush Park. Both parks are mostly flat, although there are a few gentle hills and a ravine that follows both sides of the creek, making it ruff to get down to.

Poquessing is considered a watershed park, the creek being a tributary of the Delaware River. As such it serves as an important "filter" for providing clean water downstream. It's one of the few creeks in Greater Philadelphia that hasn't been converted to a flowing sewer. Preventing your pooch from putting waste in or near the water, and not polluting it with garbage, cans, or plastic goes a long way toward preserving a clean  water supply for this area.

While both lovely green parks are connected by Benjamin Rush State Park, the south Poquessing Valley Park is accessed by a different address: 12770 Dunksferry Road. This is an urban park, passing as it does through neat suburban towns, but can be a respite from the city with its wide path, greenery, wildflowers and wildlife. Birds, many squirrels and deer appear frequently and will keep Fido's ears, eyes and nose busy! Be sure to keep the pup firmly leashed for everyone's safety!

This park fills a grrreat need for outdoor space and access to nature for Philadelphia's Northeast residents!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
