Description

The Riverside Park Off-Leash Dog Area is situated on the 470 acre Riverside Park property in Springfield, Illinois. Off-leash play is welcomed at Riverside Park Off-Leash Dog Area; however, owners are strongly cautioned that the designated play space is not fenced. The off-leash zone is bordered on each of its sides by a horse boarding facility, the Sangamon River, Carpenter Park, and a railroad.

While each of these properties provides some sort of enclosed space, it is not secure enough for dogs with a penchant to roam or escape. For this reason, only dogs who possess a solid recall should be permitted to engage in off-leash activity in the designated play space. For dogs deemed obedient enough to enjoy some off-lead time, owners must carry a leash in their hand as a precaution.

Access to this lovely public park is provided free of charge. Riverside Park itself is divided into two sections which formulate the upper and lower portions of the park. The off-leash dog area finds its home on 200 acres of property in the lower section of the facility. This portion of the property contains a pond as well as approximately one mile of land which runs the length of the beautiful Sangamon River.

There are also four athletic fields located in the lower section which are suitable for any number of sporting activities families might enjoy. Picnic areas are scattered throughout the grounds, providing the ideal spot for a light lunch or snack. There are no on-site amenities provided at Riverside Park Off-Leash Dog Area. With this in mind, owners should bring some bottled water and a dog dish with them.

Poop bags are reportedly housed on the grounds, but for owners to be certain to have access to one when needed, it is wise to bring a few extras from home. It is unknown if bathrooms are installed on the grounds for public use. Riverside Park Off-Leash Dog Area is one of three off-leash dog zones in the Springfield Park District. Park officials do require that all dogs making use of the off-leash play area be current on vaccinations and licensed with their city.

Proof of both must be furnished to any Animal Control officer upon request. It is important to note that food is strictly prohibited in any designated off-leash zone at this park. Looking for a beautiful natural space to explore? Bring Fido and the family to Riverside Park Off-Leash Dog Area!
