This park is not a members-only dog park, and it does not require any special registration with the City of Des Moines. Its location on the Des Moines River makes it near many of the downtown hotels and nearly central to most major city events. Those who live in apartments downtown or the nearby area will find this park a nice reprieve.Â
There is a lot of space, and you can wear out even a canine with boundless energy. On the downsides of the Riverwalk Dog Park, although it is fenced, there is only one section for canines of all sizes. This could put small breeds, puppies, and toy dogs at a higher risk as they play with canines many times their size. The Riverwalk Dog Park is grass and massive.Â
The wide-open field consists of many acres, plenty of space to play some long-range games like fetch or frisbee. It stays very well maintained and the grass is in excellent condition through the spring and summer months. There's an agility course set up in the Riverwalk Dog Park and many of the regular amenities you would expect at a local dog park you could find here.Â
The city stocks poop bags and empty the garbage cans here often. Water can be located at the entrance to the large fenced area. The view in one direction shows downtown and many of the buildings built around the Wells Fargo Arena, in the other direction you face the river with the East Village on your horizon. Makes for a beautiful place to bring your canine to socialize or wear themselves out.
