The property houses over 27 miles of trails for families to explore. Fido is welcome to join his owners on the premises, but he must remain on a leash at all times. There are no on-site amenities provided for canine or human use nor is there a designated dog play area.Â
To ensure they have all the necessary items for a day of fun at the park, owners should bring bottled water, a dog dish, and poop bags with them. There are no bathrooms housed on the grounds. Rock Island Trail State Park is a public facility, and access to the property is provided to all people and their pooches free of charge.Â
The area offers many different recreational activities for families to enjoy. Among the most popular outdoor opportunities are hiking, biking, inline skating, walking, and cross-country skiing. The grounds are divided into two distinct sections. The southern portion is more highly developed and boasts of 13 miles of paved property, giving it a more urban appeal.Â
This section is home to the Riverfront Museum and the Caterpillar Visitor Center. Also housed in this region is the Glen Oak Park which is home to a zoo, botanical gardens, and a fishing lagoon. The northern portion of this park forms a connecting path between the towns of Alta, Dunlap, Princeville, Wyoming, and Toulon. The walking paths meander through small towns, farmland, and forested areas.Â
This section of the park is both quaint and charming. Rock Island Trail State Park supports all Illinois state legislation. With this in mind, all canine visitors to the area are to be up to date on immunizations. A city dog license is also highly recommended.
