Experience the natural beauty of southern Illinois with your pup at the Saline County State Fish and Wildlife Area! Located 5 miles southeast of Equality, this 1,270-acre park was once the site of springs and wells that supplied brine to one of the county's salt works. Today, it is primarily a recreational area that attracts visitors who are looking to reconnect with nature.
The main feature of the SFWA is the beautiful Glen O. Jones Lake. Spanning 105 acres with a 3-mile shoreline, the lake invites boaters to ply its serene waters, as long as the motor limit of 10 HP is followed. You'll also see folks casting their lines into the lake, which contains a variety of fish such as the bluegill, largemouth bass, and crappie. According to visitors, the concession stand offering boat rentals and fishing bait is no longer operational, so you'll have to bring your own watercraft if you'd like to take Fido for a boat ride.
You and your pooch can also enjoy the water from the shore, as picnic areas with tables, drinking water, and fireplaces are scattered around the lake. In addition, there are 9 miles of scenic, designated hiking trails for you and your dog to explore, some of which encircle the water. And if you climb up the hill by the entrance, you'll find a stone overlook where you can get a bird's-eye view of the lake.
For visitors who'd like to stay overnight, the park contains a large campground that accommodates both tents and trailers. Note that electricity is not available, so you and your pup will be ruffing it. Be sure to get a camping permit from the staff once you arrive if you plan on sleeping under the stars!
Whether you spend an afternoon or a weekend at the park, always keep your furry buddy on a leash and leave only paw prints by bringing bags and cleaning up after them. Relax and recharge with Fido at the Saline County State Fish and Wildlife Area!
