San Luis State Wildlife Area, formerly known as San Luis State Park, is located in Mosca, Colorado. An area once known as a popular camping attraction, this beloved recreational area and campground is now largely untended. Situated near to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the area is renowned for its quiet, serene setting, making it the ideal haven for relaxation and reflection.Â
Campsites are now walk-in only and are available on a first come, first served basis. There are still a few remaining spots which offer electricity hook-ups, but these will discontinue as the cost becomes too great to bear. San Luis State Wildlife Area offers a rare opportunity for birdwatchers to enjoy viewing waterfowl, songbirds, raptors, and shorebirds in their natural habitat.Â
The desert setting offers a consistently warm climate for families to enjoy. Fur buddies are permitted to join their owners on the grounds but must take care not to disturb any wildlife and should also be kept leashed at all times. There are no on-site amenities provided for canine or human use. Though there used to be bathrooms on the premises, they are no longer functional.Â
Owners should come prepared for rustic camping conditions and bring with them all of the items needed to ensure Fido has a great day at the park. These include drinking water, a dog dish, and poop bags. As with most state parks, the responsibility for pet waste disposal lies with each owner. San Luis State Wildlife Area was once a private facility, and entrance to the grounds was permitted with the payment of a daily $7 fee.Â
However, it is unknown if this is still the case now that the property has become a wildlife area instead of a state park and campground. This stunning area offers many attractions for families to enjoy including hiking, biking, boating, camping, fishing, and hunting.Â
Swimming is strictly prohibited. San Luis State Wildlife Area is well-known for its breathtaking views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the San Luis Lake, and the area sand dunes, making it an ideal spot to capture beautiful photos to commemorate a wonderful vacation.
There are no official regulations posted for those visiting this idyllic state park. As a precaution, it is wise for all dogs to be current on vaccinations and in possession of a city dog license. Looking to get away from everything and enjoy a few days in a natural setting? Why not plan to visit San Luis State Wildlife Area?
