Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park is nestled on the eastern shores of Rend Lake Reservoir. This massive parcel of land spans 3,300 acres and is a prime outdoor recreation spot for the folks in southern Illinois. If your pooch wants some fun in the sun, then it’s time to head over to this pawsome park!
The park cozies up to the 19,000 acre Rend Lake
Reservoir, so, needless to say, fishing is one of its biggest draws. Bring your
rod and reel and cast a line from the shore. With any luck you’ll pull some
white or black crappie, bluegill, or channel catfish out of the lake. After
waiting for the fish to come in, your pooch will be more than ready for a walk,
so hop on the hike/bike trail and go for a stroll. This trail meanders through
the day use areas and campgrounds, passes Rend Lake Resort, and then finally
connects to the Rend Lake College Bike Trail. All in all it’s about four miles.
Your dog won’t be the only canine that loves this park.
Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park has sporting dog field trial programs. More than
25 events a year are held at the park. Highly skilled beagles, retrievers, and
bird dogs compete for local and national titles. Check the schedule and see if
there is an event you and your pooch can observe. Maybe your pal will be
inspired to learn a new trick or two!
Wayne Fitzgerrel has three major picnic areas and over
150 picnicking sites. Pack some sandwiches for you and biscuits for your pup,
so you can enjoy a leisurely lakeside lunch. Shelters, tables, fireplaces, and
playground equipment can all be found on site. The park also has an abundance
of furrific campsites.
Make your dog a happy hound by taking them to this
puptacular park!
