Willoughby Spit

As part of Ocean View’s beautiful shoreline, the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Open Space manages Willoughby Spit. This beautiful area is actually a peninsula. Water borders the park on three sides: the Chesapeake Bay to the north, Hampton Roads to the west, and Willoughby Bay to the south.

The Willoughby Spit is only open to dogs seasonally, so you can take Fido walking on the beach from April 15^th until September 30^th of each year. Your dog is only allowed on the public beaches during certain hours so owners have the possibility of taking their furry companion to explore the shoreline at designated times.

Ocean View's public beaches feature amenities such as parking, benches, shade trees, as well as restrooms. Furthermore, owners can also enjoy kayaking, floating, swimming, boating or fishing. Owners need to make sure their pooch is under their control at all times when walking by the water and well behaved when socializing with other animals nearby. 

Visitors should always pick up after their dog and carry their clean up bags, out of consideration for the surrounding environment and other people’s health. Apart from jogging or swimming, owners can also take advantage of summer concerts and dances hosted in the area, or walk alongside their four-legged friends on the white sands at Willoughby Spit enjoying a beautiful sunrise or sunset. 

If you would like to take your pooch out for a swim, you can do so, provided you have full control over your pet while in the waters. Willoughby Spit is a great place to exercise your dog and take him out for a relaxing stroll near the shorelines of Norfolk’s most amazing beaches.
