When Austin locals want to enjoy some fun and sun in the great outdoors, they head for Zilker Metropolitan Park. This 350-acre park sits right in the heart of the city and is Austin's favorite outdoor area. Best of all, a massive 45-acre section of Zilker Park is a designated off-leash area.
The Zilker Metropolitan Park Off Leash Dog Area is found in the space bounded by Stratford Drive, Barton Springs Road, and Neff Road. This huge section of green grassy terrain offers ample room for even the most energetic of pups to stretch their legs and enjoy running free.
But before you let your pooch off the leash, be warned: this off-leash area is not fenced. And as it's surrounded by roads, it's essential that you've trained a reliable recall so you can keep your dog safe. Make sure your dog is under your verbal control and that you can see them at all times.
Your pup is sure to use up plenty of energy exploring this expansive play area, so remember to bring your own water to help them stay hydrated. You'll also need to clean up after your dog whenever needed, so bring some poop bags with you and place any doggy "deposits" in the trash bins provided, and your pup will need to have a rabies vaccination before they can visit the park.
There's ample parking nearby, but please note that a $5 parking fee applies on weekends from March to September, as well as on holidays. There's also plenty of space to walk your dog throughout the rest of Zilker Park, provided you keep them on a secure leash. With over 350 acres of space to explore, there's plenty to keep you busy.
Whether you're just visiting the city or you're an Austin local, there are plenty of great reasons why your dog will love the Zilker Metropolitan Park Off Leash Dog Area.
