Adventure awaits you and your pup on the Adventure Hiking Trail! One of the longest and most scenic hiking experiences in Indiana, this 25-mile trail meanders through Corydon's Harrison-Crawford State Forest and O'Bannon Woods State Park. Also known as the AHT for short, it is a designated National Recreation Trail and part of the American Discovery Trail, so you know you're in for a treat!
The AHT begins at the Rock Creek trailhead off of State Road 462. About 1.6 miles in, you and Fido will arrive at Rendezvous Point, and from here, you can choose to follow the trail in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Hiking the entire length of the trail usually takes about three days. Overnight backpack camping is allowed, and five shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis. These structures range from a simple shed to a completely enclosed shelter with a door and wooden floor. For overnight trips, be sure to register at the state park gatehouse or property office.
Markers on trees, Carsonite posts, and 4x4 posts guide the way as you and your pooch travel across natural escarpments and the karst landscape. Sights to see include the Blue River, Indian Creek, Ohio River, caves, sinkholes, and a wide array of native vegetation and wildlife—remember to bring your camera to capture all the puptacular views! In addition, you may come across permanent wildlife openings, whose purpose is to improve and diversify habitat.
Another must-bring essential is water, which is scarce in the karst landscape. It's a good idea to plan your trip to include locations where water can be obtained, such as the campground turnoff in O'Bannon Woods. Of course, pack doggie waste bags for clean-ups and food for you and your furry pal as well. Whether you and Fido aim to complete the route or just a section, you can expect to have a furrific time on the Adventure Hiking Trail!
The AHT may sometimes be closed due to trail improvement or forest management activities. Call the state forest office before going to check. Also, wear bright clothing during hunting season.
