The Canyonlands are an extensive trail network in Lakeway, just about 20 miles west of Austin, Texas. The trails are located within a 20-acre tract at Rough Hollow Cove, which is a major inlet at Lake Travis. It's appropriately named after the scenic canyon that runs through it. You'll be able to explore overlooks of the canyon and the surrounding wilderness by means of about 6 miles of trails. You pal is sure to feel like a wild dog scampering along beside you.
Free parking is available at Swim Center Park, located at 3103 Lakeway Blvd. Here you'll find a large trailhead billboard with a large trail systems map. At this point, you can take the 0.25 mile access trail, also called Trophy Trail, to enter the Canyonlands. This trail crosses city property and Lakeway Municipal Utilities District property. As for facilities, a bathroom with a free purified water dispenser can be found just as you start the High Trail segment. All you need to bring are a water bottle, doggy waste bags, and some snacks to share!
There are several trails that make up this network, which include Trophy Trail, High Trail, Rim Trail, Canyon Trail, the Pond Trail, and Mt Lakeway Trail. The Rim Trail is known for it's furtastic overlooks and vistas of the canyon, before the Canyon Trail brings you down to lower elevations. This section features bridged creek crossings and a great waterfall to see in wet months. The more challenging Mt Lakeway Trail brings you to the summit of Mt Lakeway, with a great lookout point of Lake Travis at the top. All the trails can be combined to form a loop, which may take a couple hours to complete.
Doggos are welcome on the trail with both paws, and are likely to need a nap on the car ride home. Keep in mind that they need to stay leashed and picked up after at al times. Remember to follow Leave No Trace principles.
The Canyonlands Trails are sure to put a wag in your dog's tail!
