A hike on Moenkopi Loop is the pawfect way to spend some quality time with your furry friend. Here’s a fun fact for your pup- in Hopi Moenkopi means “place of running water.” Located in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, it is a great hike to experience the desert landscape.
The trail begins at the west end of the Visitors Center
parking lot. From here it runs across the desert floor and passes a weather
station. You won’t find many trees along the way, but keep your eyes open
creosote bush, yuccas, black brush, and desert trumpets. There are a couple
junctions to watch for. The first one that you come across leads to the Grand
Circle Trail and Calico Hills Trail. Stay to the left and keep trekking toward Moenkopi
Hill. You pass another fork for Calico Hills, but again stay left.
The climb to the top of the hill isn’t very strenuous. Once
you get to the summit, the trail crosses over a limestone slab that was created
230 million years ago. That’s woofin’ old! Stop and look for some fossils and
admire the strawberry hedgehog cactus, California barrel cactus, and the rare
pincushion cactus. A bench is strategically placed so hikers can paws for a
break and gaze out at the furrific view. When you are ready to head back, follow
the trail down the ridge, across the wash, and back to the Visitors Center.
To visit Red Rock Canyon, you'll need a $15.00 pass per vehicle.
If you live in the area, consider purchasing an annual pass for only $30.00 per
person.Bring all necessary supplies for the trek, including water and clean up bags. For a pawrific Las Vegas stroll, your pup will love the Moenkopi Loop!
