Are you and pup in a hiking rut and want a new place to venture out together? Look no further than the Rocky Ridge Horse Trail in Pope, Mississippi. Located in the northwestern portion of the state, this hiking trail is situated within the Plum Point Recreation Area which covers over 2200 acres.
Although it is designated as a horse trail, runners, hikers and bicyclists also frequently use this trail. This is actually a network of hiking trails, with the main trailhead beginning at Plum Point. Start here to be on your way to a pawtastically fun day with plenty of exciting scenery surrounding you and your fur-ever pup! Because this is a shared trail, be mindful of others. Your pup may remain off leash, but when horses are spotted, it might be a good idea for pup’s safety to restrain him, at least temporarily, to let them pass.
The paths here are a combination of dirt, gravel and paved portions, with spurs jutting out in different directions. Take one spur to Enid Lake and another to the Chickasaw Hill area. This will extend the 8-mile round trip hike a short distance, but will enhance the overall trip! Your pup is welcome to swim in the lake which is about the midway point of the overall excursion.
All pup-abilities are welcome as the terrain is mostly level, but this trail is not suitable for the handicapped. There are restrooms at the trailhead, but you must pack your own water for you to share. Be advised that Mississippi summers are very hot, and the overall temps here can get quiet extreme, so plan accordingly to keep your pup happy and healthy.
Rocky Ridge Horse Trail is a must-do hike for you and your pup to make some fur-ific memories together!
