You and your pawtastic pup are in for a treat when you visit San Luis Obispo, California. A pup-friendly hike awaits you in the Serenity Swing Hike. This trek is worth taking and will thrill Fido with some quality time spent with you and a challenge to boot.
Located in Peterson Ranch, you can pick up the trailhead on Poly Canyon Road. Parking is available, and the cost ranges from $3-$4 for a few hours, or $5 for the entire day. The trailhead is just past a local attraction called the Architecture Graveyard.
This 3.5-mile trail is rated as difficult, but that rating is not for the entire length of the trail. The first half of this puptastic hike will be easy, so you can take a pup that is not so athletic. Along the way, you can enjoy spectacular views of Cerro Romauldo, a volcanic hill which is part of the Nine Sisters chain of volcanic plugs, and walk among native brush, beautiful trees, and open spaces. The footing is compact soil and comfortable on the paws.
The second half of the hike should be left to those pups who are agile and very fit. This extremely steep climb will challenge all. The ground can be rocky with loose terrain, and slipping is common here, so plan accordingly. The summit offers incredible views of the area and a ‘serenity swing,’ as it is called, to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet you have worked so hard to reach.
You will find restrooms at the Architecture Graveyard at the trailhead. Please keep Fido on leash throughout this hike, which is difficult when you are climbing the steep portion. Carry plenty of water and pack out what you pack in as there are no trash bins.

The last portion of the trail surface can become crumbly dirt after a dry summer season. Use additional care here not to slip.
