Overview

Victor is a Texas-based pet food brand that produces recipes catering to your feline or canine's specific health needs. With its patented VPRO™ ingredient blend and formulas high in animal protein, Victor seems like the real deal—but is it a good option for your cat?

We rate Victor cat food 3.5 out of 5. While Victor deserves credit for its wet food quality and its high animal protein contents, it misses out on a top rating due to its use of filler ingredients. Some of its recipes also have higher fat levels than we like to see in cat foods.

Keep reading for our unbiased, in-depth Victor cat food review, where we look at ingredient quality, recalls, consumer reviews, and more.

Victor cat food product ranges and flavors

Victor serves up four dry and two wet cat foods, each catering to specific nutritional needs.

All Victor cat foods are "complete and balanced," according to the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutrient profile guidelines. Victor kibbles are suitable for all life stages, while Victor wet foods are suitable for adult maintenance.

Victor Mers Feline dry cat food

Victor Mers Feline

Mers Feline dry cat food is Victor's standard kibble, designed for multi-cat households and suitable for indoor and outdoor felines.

This grain-inclusive recipe lists chicken meal and beef meal as the primary protein sources. While we prefer to see quality cuts of meat in cat foods, meat meals are high in protein, with 300% more protein than unprocessed meat.

The next most common ingredients are whole grain brown rice and grain sorghum. As cats don't require high carbohydrate levels in their diets, these grains have low nutritional value and are often considered fillers.

That said, brown rice is one of the best-quality grains you'll find in cat foods, as they're high in fiber and some nutrients like niacin. Sorghum is preferable to corn in cat food and is rich in antioxidants.

Other notable ingredients in Mers Feline dry cat foods include menhaden fish meal, which is rich in omega fatty acids, and chicken fat, which is high in linoleic acid, supporting skin and coat health.

Victor Mers Feline dry cat food contains average protein (35.1% as dry matter) and slightly above average fat (17.5% as dry matter) compared to other cat foods.

Victor Healthy Skin & Coat and Fit Feline dry cat food

Victor Healthy Skin & Coat and Fit Feline

Victor offers two dry foods aimed at indoor purring pals: Grain Free Healthy Skin & Coat and Grain Free Fit Feline. Both recipes include 85% protein from animals and 15% from plant sources.

As their names suggest, you'll find no grains in these recipes! Instead, peas, sweet potato, and garbanzo beans are the primary carbs. These ingredients are excellent natural fiber sources, which helps with digestion. Plus, sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A.

Grain Free Healthy Skin & Coat lists menhaden fish meal as the primary protein, which is loaded with omega fatty acids that boost skin and coat health.

Grain Free Fit Feline includes chicken, fish, and duck meal as the top ingredients. These meat meals are lower in fat and higher in protein to support lean muscle mass.

Victor Grain Free Healthy Skin & Coat contains above-average protein (41.7% as dry matter) and above-average fat (19.7% as dry matter) compared to other dry cat foods.

Victor Grain Free Fit Feline contains above-average protein (41.7% as dry matter) and slightly above-average fat (17.5% as dry matter) compared to other dry cat foods.

Victor Hi-Pro Plus dry cat food

Victor Hi-Pro Plus

Designed specifically for active cats and kittens, Hi-Pro Plus is rich in animal protein but overall consists of ingredients similar to those in Victor's standard grain-inclusive Mers Feline kibble.

The top five ingredients in Victor Hi-Pro Plus cat food are menhaden fish meal, whole grain brown rice, chicken fat, chicken meal, and grain sorghum.

As mentioned, whole grain brown rice and grain sorghum are some of the best grains you'll find in cat foods but are still low in nutritional value. Menhaden fish meal is a lean meat protein rich in fatty acids.

Victor Hi-Pro Plus dry cat food contains above-average protein (41.7% as dry matter) and slightly above-average fat (17.5% as dry matter). Despite being advertised for active cats and growth, Hi-Pro Plus has a protein-to-fat ratio similar to Mers Feline and Grain Free Fit Feline.

Victor Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté wet cat food

Victor Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté

Victor Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté is an all-natural cat food—no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives here! It's made with quality cuts of chicken, liver, and salmon with no by-products of meat meals.

Peas, carrots, and potatoes are top ingredients in Victor Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté, which are rich in natural fiber. Dried egg product is added as a secondary animal protein source.

Other notable ingredients include cranberries and blueberries, which are rich in antioxidants and help prevent urinary tract infections. One downside of this recipe is the inclusion of brewer's rice, a low-quality feed-grade grain that's a by-product of rice milling.

Overall, Victor Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté is an excellent quality wet food but is a little high in fat for senior felines and indoor cats.

Victor Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté contains above-average protein (40.9% as dry matter) and above-average fat (27.2% as dry matter) compared to other wet cat foods.

Victor Shredded Chicken Dinner Cuts in Gravy wet cat food

Victor Shredded Chicken Dinner Cuts in Gravy

Victor Grain Free Shredded Chicken Dinner Cuts in Gravy is a limited ingredient alternative to its Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté recipe and is ideal for cats with food allergies and sensitivities.

This grain-free formula includes no wheat, soy, or corn. It's made with only chicken and eggs as animal proteins—ideal for cats with meat allergies. Aside from supplemental vitamins and minerals, it consists of fewer than ten ingredients.

Grain Free Shredded Chicken Dinner Cuts in Gravy is another high quality wet cat food, even though it’s a little high in fat.

Victor Grain Free Shredded Chicken Dinner Cuts in Gravy contains above-average protein (44.4% as dry matter) and above-average fat (22.2 % as dry matter) compared to most wet cat food.

Why Wag! likes Victor cat food

On the fence about feeding your cat Victor? Here are a few reasons we like this popular cat food brand.

Affordability

Victor cat food is fairly affordable compared to other brands of similar quality.

For example, a case of 24 5.5-oz cans of Turkey & Salmon Dinner Paté costs $39.99 on Chewy, which works out to $0.30 per oz.

By comparison, a case of 30 3-oz cans of Fancy Feast Medleys Poultry costs $36.00 on Chewy, which works out to $0.40 per oz. Overall, Victor Turkey & Salmon Dinner Paté is substantially cheaper and better quality than Fancy Feast Medleys.

Feline VPRO™ ingredient blend

One of Victor's biggest selling points is its Feline VPRO™ ingredient blend, designed by industry experts to support your cat's health at all ages.

It includes a mix of l-carnitine, mineral complexes, probiotics, and prebiotics to support your cat's immune system, metabolism, digestion, and skin/coat health. Victor's Feline VPRO™ Blend is an excellent and unique addition to any cat's diet.

High in animal protein

The protein in Victor dry cat foods is 85% to 88% animal-based, ensuring your feline friend gets all the amino acids they need to thrive.

The protein levels in many cat foods are bloated with plant-based proteins, which aren't complete proteins for cats as they don't contain all essential amino acids. You can rest easy feeding your cat Victor kibble, knowing their diet includes ample species-appropriate protein.

Premium-quality wet foods

Victor produces high-quality grain-free and grain-inclusive wet cat foods. They're made with natural fiber sources and quality cuts of meat to ensure they're easy on your purring pal's digestive tract. They also contain above-average protein levels to give your cat all the energy they need to explore and play.

Concerns & considerations

Keep scrolling for a few things to consider before you buy Victor cat food for your pint-sized panther.

High fat content

Many Victor recipes contain above-average fat levels. While fat is a key energy source, high fat levels can contribute to obesity and other health conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Consider picking a different cat food if you’re worried about our cat’s weight or they have an inactive lifestyle.

High carb content

Several Victor recipes, like Turkey and Salmon Dinner Pâté and Mers Feline, have higher carb contents than we like to see in cat foods.

While carb levels in these foods aren't worryingly high, they can pose issues for diabetic cats who need to control their blood sugar.

Multiple animal proteins

Almost all Victor cat foods contain multiple animal proteins. While this isn't an issue for most cats, it can upset some cat's stomachs if they have food sensitivities or allergies.

What pet parents say about Victor cat food

"My dog ate victor and was looking to upgrade my cats food. I have 3 cats and I buy one bag a month but they eat wet food too. Starting ordering on chewy for a better price and it gets here fast. I love it especially in the cold weather!"

"My cats really enjoyed and liked this brand of food. It was their first time trying it out and I had no issues."

Victor cat food history

Mid America Pet Food, a pet food company founded in 2007, makes Victor dog and cat foods. Mid America Pet Food owns several other pet food brands, including Eagle Mountain, Nature's Logic, and Wayne Feeds.

While there's not a lot of information available on Victor's history, it's clear the brand focuses on producing locally manufactured pet foods with US-sourced ingredients.

Victor manufactures all its pet food at its facilities in Mount Pleasant, East Texas, using ingredients sourced primarily from Texas.

Victor cat food recalls

On September 3rd, 2023, Mid America Pet Food issued a widespread voluntary recall of its Hi-Pro Plus dry dog food due to potential Salmonella contamination.

On November 9th, 2023, Mid America Pet Food expanded its previous Salmonella recall to include other products, including its entire dry cat food range, with sell-by dates before 10/31/24.

This recall was precautionary, and it's unclear whether any pets became ill. Since this recall, Victor reviewed its food safety plan, performing hundreds of daily safety checks to ensure its pet foods are safe to consume.
