Overview
True Acre Foods is a dog food brand by online pet retailer Chewy, serving up budget-friendly, grain-free wet and dry recipes for your dog to devour at dinnertime. But is True Acre right for your pup?
We rate True Acre as above-average quality dog food due to its affordability and use of real meat as the top ingredient. It misses out on a higher rating because it includes fillers and animal by-products.
Read on for our full True Acre dog food review, where we take a closer look at its individual products, benefits, drawbacks, and recalls.

True Acre dog food product ranges and flavors
True Acre Foods has a limited dog food range featuring four kibble and six wet varieties. There’s also a wide range of dog treats and chews available.
All True Acre dog foods are “complete and balanced,” meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutrient profile guidelines for all life stages or adult maintenance. Treats and chews are for supplemental feeding only.
True Acre Dry Dog Food
True Acre dry dog food
True Acre produces two dry dog food flavors for all life stages and two recipes formulated for weight control and large breeds.
One big plus of these recipes is they list a quality cut of meat as the top ingredient. However, several manufacturing by-products, including canola meal, poultry by-product meal, and soybean meal, are listed within the top five ingredients. Canola and soybean meals are both high in protein but are less nutritionally complete protein sources than meat.
Natural, nutritionally beneficial secondary ingredients include carrots, cranberries, and flaxseed. True Acre Grain-Free Chicken & Vegetables Weight Control dog food contains only 9% fat as dry matter, which is below-average for dog food, making it a great choice for weight-watching woofers.
True Acre dog foods have better protein and fat levels than your typical kibble — True Acre Grain-Free Chicken & Vegetables contains above-average protein (27.2% as dry matter) and near-average fat (14.7% as dry matter).
With an above-average protein content and real meat as the top ingredient, True Acre is a good budget-friendly dry food. Its main downside is the inclusion of several lower-quality by-products.
True Acre dry dog food flavors:
- Grain-Free Beef & Vegetables
- Grain-Free Chicken & Vegetables
- Grain-Free Chicken & Vegetables Weight Control
- Grain-Free Chicken & Vegetables Large Breed
True Acre Wet Dog Food
True Acre wet dog food
Each True Acre wet dog food is grain-free and packaged in single-serve cups for easy feeding. Real cuts of meat, chicken broth, and water are the top ingredients in each variety. All recipes include meat by-products without stating the type of meat — not ideal for dogs with specific meat allergies.
True Acre wet dog foods lack transparency, with added colors and natural flavors in each recipe. What food colorings or natural flavors True Acre adds to its wet foods is unclear.
One of the biggest pros of True Acre wet dog food is its high protein content. For example, True Acre Porterhouse wet dog food contains high protein (50% as dry matter) and above-average fat (22.2% as dry matter) compared to standard wet dog food.
Overall, True Acre wet dog food is good choice for your pup considering its price. That said, the use of unnamed meat by-products means you’re best off picking a different brand if your dog has a sensitive stomach and allergies.
True Acre wet dog food flavors:
- Porterhouse
- Filet Mignon
- Chicken & Liver
- Beef
- Grilled Chicken
- Turkey
True Acre Dog Treats and Chews
True Acre dog treats and chews
True Acre offers a wide range of over 25 dental chews, training treats, and imitation bones for pooches that love to snack.
True Acre dental treats are designed to help remove plaque and tartar while keeping your canine’s breath fresh. Each variety contains no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. However, they’re not particularly nutritious — they're made mainly from rice flour and wheat flour, with pork gelatin as the primary meat source.
True Acre bones and hard chews come in various shapes and textures and contain no rawhide. Hearty Bones are True Acre’s best-quality bone chews, with real meat as the main ingredient. All other hard chews list corn flour or rice flour as the top ingredient.
True Acre soft and chewy dog treats include Mini Training Rewards and Thick-Cut Strips. Mini Training Rewards are good quality, with one or two cuts of meat at the top of the ingredient list. They’re great low-value training rewards at just two calories a piece.
True Acre Thick-Cut Strips resemble crispy bacon, with pork, rice flour, and oat flour as the top ingredients. At 57 calories a piece, you’re best saving these treats as high-value rewards.
True Acre dog treat ranges:
- Dental Treats
- Hearty Bones
- Stuffed Bones
- Stuffed Twists
- Rolled Sticks
- Knotted Bones
- Thick-Cut Strips
- Mini Training Rewards
Why Wag! likes True Acre dog food
Meat is the main ingredient
All True Acre dog food recipes list a real cut of meat as the top ingredient — a sign of a decent quality dog food. This is especially true of kibbles, which often list a meat meal or by-product as the primary protein source.
While True Acre may use some lower-quality ingredients to inflate its protein percentages, you can rest easy knowing your pup is eating dog food that’s rich in real meat.
Natural secondary ingredients
Affordable
True Acre may not be the best dog food on the market — but it’s highly affordable considering its all-round quality.
At the time of writing, a 40-lb bag of True Acre Foods Grain-Free Chicken & Vegetable Dry Dog Food costs $53.99 on Chewy, at $1.35 per lb. With Chewy Autoship saving you up to 35% on your first order, you get this food for as little as $35.09 at just $0.87 per lb.
Concerns & considerations
Controversial ingredients
One of the main drawbacks of True Acre is its use of controversial and/or filler ingredients in its dog foods. These ingredients are safe for dogs but don’t provide the best nutritional value.
All wet and dry foods include meat or poultry by-products — slaughterhouse waste made of a mixture of meats, among the lowest quality meat proteins you’ll find in dog food.
Many recipes include a mixture of soybean meal, canola meal, tomato pomace, and dried beet pulp. All these ingredients are manufacturing by-products that have moderate nutritional value. Dog food companies sometimes use canola meal and soybean meal to inflate the protein levels in dog foods without adding the same nutritional value as meat.
High carb content in dry foods
Peas and pea starch are in the top three ingredients in True Acre kibbles, meaning they’re quite high in carbohydrates — each recipe consists of around 50% carbs.
While there's no evidence that carbs are bad for dogs, we’d prefer higher healthy fat and protein to ensure the best nutrition possible for your pooch.

For these dogs in desperate need of help and a proper diet, I am their last resort. And I am so very grateful for [Chewy]. Great company. I have 10 dogs and 8 cats that count on me to do my best to rehabilitate and care for them. I am a senior that cares for their every need. All by myself."
"This dog food is the best for the price/lbs! And I love that meat is the first ingredient."
