Located merely minutes from Somonauk is the neighborhood surrounding E Church St. If you drove through this area, you would have no idea it is home to Sannauk Forest Preserve, a large open grassy area. There is plenty of space to run and play with your pup, but be warned -- your pooch must be on a leash at all times. This park is a special treat for anyone who loves trains, because there is a train track on one edge of the park so you and your pup will be able to see and hear a huge train in motion up close!

City Center

If you're ever bored in your town, head to the neighboring town of Sandwich. Situated in the the neighborhood of City Center is Millstone Park. It will not take you more than ten minutes in your car to get there. This park is pretty bare bones, so don't expect any doggie playgrounds or amenities. It has a small playground and a large stretch of grass. The park is not an off-leash park, so make sure your pooch is on a leash at all times. The park is frequented by locals who like to sit in the grass and play with their families and dogs, so you may even make a friend or two!

Lake Holiday

Only ten minutes away from Somonauk is the beautiful Lake Holiday. This beautiful area is 328 acres in size complete with a large man-made lake. You will find plenty of people swimming, boating and fishing here. What is the fun of having a dog if you can't take them to a beautiful place like that? Pack a picnic, grab a few doggie toys, and spend the day at the lake. There is even a marina at the lake where you can rent fishing or boating equipment. You know your pooch would be so excited if you pulled a fish out of the water!

City Center

Because of the abundance of land in the great state of Illinois, there are plenty of large nature preserves where you can spend your day with your most loyal companion. If you drive only fifteen miles east of Somonauk, you will arrive at Silver Springs State Park. This gigantic park has everything you could ask for, except a dog park. It has plenty of open grassy areas where you and your family can cook and eat, as well as plenty of spots near the water where you can sit and relax. Just remember to take a leash, as park rangers could ticket you for leaving your pup unleashed or leaving behind doggie poop.

Central Waterman

If you really love your loyal pooch, you will bite the bullet and drive a mere twenty minutes to Central Waterman, where you will find Shabbona Lake State Park. This vast park is a whopping 1,550 acres! There is more than enough space for you and your pooch to have a great day outdoors. The park also has a large lake in the center where people fish, swim and boat. Plus, the park is open throughout the winter for winter sports. Just make sure your pup has the proper shoes and coat before spending the day in the snow!
