Majestic Tree Hound

United States

The Majestic Treehound is a large sized dog that was developed in recent times (20th Century) to hunt large game animals such as bears, bobcats and mountain lions. They are terrific hunters, hard workers, and are very loyal and devoted companions. Rarely seen outside the United States, these friendly dogs are gentle and kind with children and get along well with other dogs or household pets. In fact, they are so friendly that it renders them next to useless as a guard dog as they are more inclined to welcome unwanted guests rather than chase them off. However, their sheer size and muscle may act in their favor as a deterrent. This dog does need regular daily exercise, which makes them unsuitable for apartment living. They can also be a bit noisy when excited. But their willing nature makes them ideal to train, and you can expect fewer repetitions because of this when training. The Majestic Treehound bonds closely to its owners, and may suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for too long.

Majestic Tree Hound Breed History

The Majestic Tree Hound is a newcomer and was developed as a hunter's companion and working dog. But this dog's origins can be traced back to a breeder called Francis Hubert who perfected the breed in southern France during the 8th Century.  The Saint Hubert Hounds were working dogs in the field of hunting and were also utilized to hunt down the numerous poachers who encroached on other landowner's territory. After crossing the dog with other hounds, a new strain was developed, which was named the Talbot Hound. Both types of hounds became known as 'Blooded Hounds' which is where the term Bloodhound originated. In the year 1066, the Bloodhounds were brought to England by William the Conqueror and the English nobility used them for chasing foxes. Another crossing of the Bloodhounds this time with the Greyhound produced a stronger breed of running hound. Over the years this cross-breeding habit continued, and hound-types have come and gone. The Majestic Tree Hound is like returning to their roots, as they have gone through a careful breeding selection and culling to recreate the old strains of hounds originally owned by the American early settlers. Breeders decided it was better to register this new type of hound as a new breed and in 1980 the National Majestic Tree Hound Association began headed by Lee Newhart Jr. In the same year, the very first Majestic Tree Hound was registered with the National Kennel Club. At last, this gentle dog with its loud booming voice has gained respectability and has earned a place in the dog fancier's heart.

Majestic Tree Hound Breed Appearance

Big and beautiful, the Majestic Treehound is powerfully built and is generally taller than other breeds of hounds. Their head is quite narrow and long in shape, and they have a dignified and solemn expression. The eyes are deep set and dark in color, while ears are long and floppy hanging close to the side of their face. A powerful yet pleasing body conformation consists of a deep chest that gives them their stamina, and strong sturdy legs and well rounded padded paws that seem suited for all terrain. A long neck and sloping shoulders and a sloping back blends into a slightly arched loin. It is their large nose that gives this dog their ultra-sensitive scenting ability. They have the typical hound lips form - hanging flews from behind and this arrangement transforms to form dewlaps. The Majestic Treehound comes in many colors from white, all the way through to black, and includes red, spots and or a saddle, or blue ticking. Beautiful and humble, affectionate and loyal - this is the Majestic Treehound.

Majestic Tree Hound Breed Maintenance

The Majestic Tree Hound requires little maintenance but would benefit from a weekly grooming and brushing regime. Their short coat is almost self-cleaning, and will probably only require a rub down with a damp cloth if they get dirty. It is important to preserve the coat's natural oils which protects them from the elements, so don't over bathe this dog. Their long floppy ears will require frequent checking to ensure they are healthy, as inflammation can easily take hold in this protected warm area. Most working Majestic Tree Hounds will wear their nails down while working on tough terrain but check once in a while to see whether the nails require trimming. Like most dogs, dental care is very important, and it is easier to get your dog used to teeth brushing as a pup. Teaching an older dog a new trick like teeth brushing could prove to be very interesting. The Majestic Tree Hound is an old softie; they will love the attention you are giving them and will bask in your attention as you groom them.

Majestic Tree Hound Temperament

This affable, good looking dog has a gentle nature and is affectionate and people oriented. In fact, they can experience separation anxiety and boredom if left alone for too long. They get along well with children and other pets, although when young they can be boisterous at play. As a hunter's companion, they are ideal. This dog will work their heart out for their owner, and at home - well, you couldn't wish for a better-behaved dog. They are the perfect dog, demonstrating a willingness to learn and please their owners, and they respond well to training. The Majestic  Tree Hound is well socialized and can be taken into many situations where they will always show their class by being obedient and happy. There is not an aggressive bone in their body, which may seem strange for a hunting dog, but for them, it is the thrill of following a trail and pointing out the prey to their owner. This dog will play games, get goofy with the kids, or just chill out at your feet - anything, as long as they are with you. If they are not given enough to do or exercised regularly (as in daily) they can become destructive, digging up the garden, or playing rough inside the house. But usually, they are one soggy, loveable mutt who builds their whole life around yours.

Majestic Tree Hound Activity Requirements

The Majestic Tree Hound is a large dog and needs plenty of room to exercise in. An apartment is not really suited to this dog, as they have a very loud, booming voice when they get excited.  They are great companions for walkers and runners and have superb stamina and persistence out in the field. As a hunter's companion, they are ideal. For their size, they are quite playful and are very gentle and affectionate with children. A home in the country is ideal for this pooch, or at least a house with a securely fenced yard so that they can prowl to their heart's content. If you are not using them for hunting, keep their mental skills honed by playing games where they are required to find someone who is hiding, or make them work for their meal by seeking out where you hide their stuff. A busy dog is a happy dog and one who gets into less trouble.

Wiley joined our family as a rescue when COVID started. He had spent his lifeoutside in the harsh MN winter. Crossing the the St Croix river in search of food and traveling with a pack of coyotes. Since joining our family he's had to learn many things but has adjusted quickly. He is definitely stubborn but also very smart. He likes to chase the cat and enjoys chasing and catching squirrels. He is protective of his familybut very loving and gentle. He definitely gets wound up in the evening if he has not had enough exercise. He gets along well with our other dog, he constantly wants to play and sometimes doesn't know when to stop. He loves to run, swim and play in the snow. He enjoys lots of pets, baths and being brushed. He has been an amazing addition to our family.

Question

Can a 4 year old majestic treeing hound that bays and barks constantly be taught not to? Or is it too ingrained

Answer

Question - Behavior
Question

I have had my MJT hound almost 2 years adopted at 11 months. Neglected, low weight, basically abandoned. She is really a wonderful girl! She seemed fine when I went to work, came home, she was panting(which has continued), and had all her squeaky toys(her babies) on my bed. Whining, she goes outside with one in her mouth whining, comes in the same. She has taken all her 12 toys into the next room and hard for her to leave. When we do leave first thing back she runs to them. Last Jan., or Feb. strong winds knocked down a couple of my fence panels. She behaved very much the same way.
