Pendleton, Indiana was formed around Fall Creek. The creek provided the town with clean drinking water and a source of power that allowed mills to operate and business to thrive. This small town was also the site of important historic events. In the mid-19th century, Frederick Douglass gave a speech in Pendleton, where his life was allegedly threatened. The town residents helped him get out of town safely.

Pendleton also saw the massacre of a Native American family by white settlers, who were hanged for the crime. This was the first time in American history that whites were given the death penalty for murdering Native Americans.

Today, Pendleton is a quaint community that's home to a vast 150-acre park -- that's a lot of space for a town of just over 4,000 people, but it means you and your pup will have plenty of chances to explore! Falls Park should be your first stop. You will have to keep your dog on a leash, but the view of the falls are barktastic. You can enjoy the green space, have a picnic, or play within sight of the falls. The playground and tot lot are perfect for the mini humans to enjoy. The baseball diamond is closed in, but open to anyone who wants to play when a game isn't scheduled.

Pendleton might be puny, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in small-town charm and outdoor beauty!

To quench your thirst for adventure, you might want to take a 23-mile trip over to Noblesville. This is where you will find White River Greenway. Rails-to-Trails really did something worth barking about when they created this part of the trail system. It runs beside the White River and offers spectacular views. You will cross a completely restored 1837 footbridge, which is almost enough to make you want to stop your adventure and spend the day admiring the view. There aren't any water stops, so bring your own. Don't forget to bring your doggie waste bags! You'll find trash cans here and there along the trail where you can dispose of them.

Anderson is about eight to ten miles from Pendleton, depending on which part of town you're going to. Not only will you find awesome pet-friendly places to eat here, but you'll also find Canine Companion Corral. This is the best place to bring your pet to socialize and get off her leash so that she can play for a while. Green grass, obstacles, and toys are all located inside the fence. Water is provided in the summer, but is turned off in the winter. You'll have access to cleaning stations that stay stocked. The only downside is that you won't have a lot of seating options here.

You may think that going ten miles to Anderson just for pizza is silly, but you won't find just any old pizza pie here. Greek's Pizzeria is the go-to place for barkworthy pizza. The Gourmet House Special combines the deliciousness of Greek cuisine with the classic Italian pizza. Vegan options like the Garden Pizza are perfect for anyone, vegan or not. The best part, besides the ooey goey cheese, is that you can bring your dog with you to get the best pizza in the area! Just bring your leash and grab an outdoor table.

When you are all finished at the dog park in Anderson, come on over to Culver's. You and your dog can grab an outdoor table while you wait for your burger, cheese curds, or frozen custard. In a hurry to get back home? Grab it to-go! If you dine outside, your pup will need to stay on a leash at all times. Make sure you bring a water dish with you. If you need a place to crash while you're in Anderson, you'll find a few budget- and pet-friendly hotel chains near Culver's, around the intersection of I-69 and Highway 109.
