Kennelworth
Kennelworth is a quaint suburban neighborhood bordered by Washington Street to the south and the Appomattox River to the north. It is a nice neighborhood to explore with a canine companion as there are many dog-friendly activities there. McKenzie Street Park makes for a pleasant walk through nature — the walking path will take you through the forest and past a small creek. There are also restaurants with dog-friendly outdoor tables nearby: Demolition Coffee is a great spot for a hot drink and a snack, and Ammo Brewery has an extensive list of craft beers on tap, as well as some great food!

Downtown Petersburg
Petersburg City Center offers a variety of choices to anyone looking for something to do with their furry friend. There are a number of parks in town where you can stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh Virginia air. Central Park on Sycamore Street is a nice spot for a stroll, and it is located right in the heart of town so you’ll have lots to do nearby. Another option is West End Park on Augusta Avenue; this is one of Petersburg’s larger parks. For a smaller, quieter park try Jefferson Street Park just south of Central Park. All of the parks require leashes.

Westbourne
Westbourne is the home of one of Petersburg’s greatest places for dog owners, Lee Memorial Park. This is a fantastic location for anyone who wants to experience some of the natural beauty of Virginia, as the park spans over 330 acres, 312 of which are natural, undeveloped parkland. There are multiple walking trails that you can choose from, and the park has benches, restrooms, a lake, a wildflower sanctuary and more! The park closes at midnight and opens up at 6 am, so you have basically all day to explore. Just make sure your dog stays leashed while you’re there.

Northeast Petersburg
The east side of town is definitely an area you’ll want to visit if you are traveling through Petersburg with your dog. There are lots of things to do there, and you might want to start out at Petersburg National Battlefield. This historic location played an important role in the Civil War, and it is now a large park where you can spend some time outside with your canine companion!
