Wailupe Beach Park

Wailupe Beach Park is a small neighborhood hangout in East Honolulu. This beach park is not great for swimming, but it is put to good use by fishermen, surfers and picnickers. The beach is narrow, and the water is murky, but you'll still get to enjoy some ocean views and a salty breeze with your four-legged friend. 

Dogs are allowed in areas below the high tide line on this beach, meaning the ocean side of a line marked by ocean debris and seaweed. At low tide, you and your pal can explore the tide pools and see all kinds of critters and shells. Be sure your curious canine doesn't get their nose pinched! There is a private parking lot here, but many people park at the shopping center and cross the highway to get to the beach. Because it's tricky cross the highway, the beach is often secluded and a hidden gem for many surfers. You may have to put up with some traffic noise from the nearby highway. 

The ruggedness of this part of the coast is the reason for the less than ideal swimming conditions. The nearshore ocean bottom is too shallow for swimming, and there is a coral reef. Some surfers enter the ocean here to get to the surf spots Wailupe, Kim's, Suicides and Bones offshore. It's recommended that only intermediate and expert surfers venture out here because the waves break over a shallow, jagged and unforgiving reef. The amenities at this beach include restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. It's a great spot to stop by on a long drive, use the facilities, stretch your legs, and take in the views. 

Dogs are welcome at this park as long as they follow the leash rules and are picked up after at all times. You may even encounter some other furry friends! Please be sure your pal has enough fresh drinking water and shade, and bring clean up bags too.
