Your beloved pup can reconnect with their wild side at Algonac State Park. Located right on the banks of the St. Clair River, this 1,500 acre pawperty is the pawfect place to spend some quality time with your furry BFF!
When they arrive at the park, the first thing your pooch
will want to do is hit the trails, so it's a good thing Algonac State Park has four different trails
to choose from. For a shorter hike, follow Lakeplain Prairie Trail or Blazing
Star Trail that are both just half a mile. Oak Savanna Trail is 2.5 miles, and a one
mile portion of the Bridge to Bay Trail runs right through the park. Your pup
will be impressed to know that the park’s lake plain prairies and lake plain
oak savannas are rare habitats. Over a dozen protected species live in
these ecosystems. If you do come across wildlife, help your pooch mind their manners
and make sure they don’t chase or bark at them. Tote water for you both to drink, and clean-up bags on your adventure.
Local anglers know that the park’s shoreline is a prime
walleye fishing spot. Bring your rod and reel along and try your luck at
pulling in a whopper. The river frontage is also a well known place to view
international freighters as they make their way through the water. Algonac
State Park also has two campgrounds. The Wagonwheel Campground is more primitive, while
Riverfront Campground has electrical hookups. All sites have access to modern
restrooms and water. Day trippers can take advantage of the day use picnic shelters,
grills, and fire pits.
When it comes to visiting Algonac State Park,
it pays to be a Michigan resident. An annual Recreation Passport can be
purchased for $11.00 at the time of your license plate renewal or for $16.00 at
a State Park. A daily pass for non-residents is $9.00.
