In the lower northern peninsula of Michigan, stretching from Grayling to Oscoda is the Huron National Forest, some of which touches the shores of Lake Huron. This vast forest is filled with marshlands, dunes, trails, and bogs. Dogs are allowed in the Huron Forest, as long as, they are on a leash no longer than six feet long. Dogs are not allowed on any of the beaches or swimming areas within the National Forest.Â
This forest is lush with greenery, waterways and nice trails that are easy for you and your dog to enjoy. As stated above, dogs are allowed in most areas of the park including desolate wildlife areas, however, they must be leashed. Also, in the spring, some park areas may be closed off to dogs to protect endangered or threatened species. After spring these specific areas may reopen again.Â
The park does have areas where you can camp, hike, and swim but dogs are not allowed to swim in any public swimming area. The park also asks that you do not disturb plants or animals within the park. It’s important to keep these natural habitats alive and well. When you and your dog need a break, the park offers various areas for sitting and resting as well. Plan to bring some snacks for you and your dog so you can kick back and relax after a long trail hike.Â
The Huron National Forest has so much to offer in exploring and hiking. It’s the perfect place to take a day trip or an overnight adventure with your dog. The natural beauty of this park will have you falling in love with nature all over again. There is nothing better than a dog-friendly national forest, so if you are anywhere near the Huron National Forest, take a minute to plan a trip for you and your dog. This is one area you both will enjoy.Â
