Great Northern Dam Far West Off Leash Dog Area, Austin, TX

The Great Northern Far West Dam Off-Leash Dog Area in Austin, TX is also known as the Great Basin Dog Park and the Great Basin Detention Off-leash Dog Area. Set between Great Northern and Shoal Creek Boulevards, this oval space is the pawrfect spot to take your pup for socializing, cavorting with pals, or just sniffing. If your doggo loves to play fetch, this is the place for them! The gently hilly terrain is great for a furbulous workout and trees offer shelter from the sun! Paved and dirt paths are pawsome for strolls, and a stepped stone retaining wall satisfies Fido's need to climb.

It's important to know that Far West is one of Austin's unfenced off-leash areas. It's a wide-open, natural grass playground so fur babies should be well-trained to respond to basic commands to keep them safe from traffic, especially in recall. And although they can play unleashed, dog parents should carry the leash with them in case of a fracas or emergency, as well as when entering and exiting the park.

The Far West dog park was developed in a flood run-off area and although this means there's sometimes plenty of water around, fur buddies should be discouraged from drinking or playing in it because the basin has been known to collect algae. Bring plenty of fresh or bottled water with you to keep you and your bestie well-hydrated.  

There's free parking near the entrance on Great Northern Boulevard, and the park provides trash cans and waste bag stations to make picking up after your doggo easy. It's a good idea to bring some of your own bags in case there's a shortage. The park asks that all pups be rabies vaccinated and licensed.  Dogs under the age of two months and females in heat should be left at home.
