A recent addition to the growing list of Boston dog parks, the Garvey Playground Dog Park was finished in February 2021 as part of the Garvey Park renovations. The off-leash dog park is a smallish doggy play space that’s pupular with the residents and dogs of Dorchester.
While the park is located near Interstate 93 and busy Morrissey Boulevard, the pups are kept safe with sturdy fencing and double entry gates. There’s convenient free parking on one side of the park, and it’s important to keep your dog on a leash for the walk to and from the dog park gates. Also, be sure to plan ahead, as there are no restrooms in the park for humans.
The sandy surface is easy on the footpads, and doggos and people seeking shade from the summer sun will find lots of trees here. The sand can get hot on a sunny day, so consider bringing dog booties or footpad balm with you, as well as the doggy sunblock for those sensitive ear tips and noses on sunny days.Â
A section for small dogs that might feel intimidated among the larger pooches keeps them playing at their own speed, and a bench gives pup parents a place to rest while keeping an eye on their fur babies. Waste bags are provided, but it’s suggested pet parents bring their own bags. A water fountain features an attached bowl for fur babies, a spout for their humans, and a faucet specially for water bottle refills. Boston’s park rules apply here, including having pups wear a license and rabies tag and picking up after your pup.Â
If your pup still has some energy to burn after romping in the dog park, take a cool-down stroll on the nearby 5-mile Lower Neponset River Trail.Â
