After a long and busy week, reward your pup with a weekend getaway to Island Lake Recreation Area. This massive park spreads across 4,000 acres of meadows, hardwood forests, and open brush land. Your furry friend will love the opportunity to reconnect with Mother Nature and enjoy some outdoor fun.
Canine visitors will be happy to know that the park has
nearly 20 miles of trails. Don’t be surprised if your pup wants to hit
the trails as soon as they arrive. The Yellow Loop circles through the east
side of the park. As it meanders around Huron River, this trail leads you
through shady woodlands and open fields. You’ll also cross Mann Creek. All in
all it’s over five miles long, so your pup will get a healthy dose of
exercise.Â
The Blue Loop travels through the western portion of the
park. At nine miles, it’s considerably longer than the Yellow Loop. If you opt
for this trail, your pooch will see woodlands, meadows, and wetlands. Keep an
eye open for the wild critters that call this place home. Don’t forget to carry
more than enough water for you and your four legged hiking partner, as well as clean-up bags.Â
Since the park contains four lakes and has access to
Huron River, you can imagine it’s a pupular spot for water sports. On any given
day, you’ll see visitors fishing, boating, swimming, or paddling. But that’s not
all. Island Lake also features campgrounds, picnic areas, trails for biking,
metal detecting, and hunting. And, it’s the only Michigan state park that has a
hot air balloon launch. This place has everything!
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entry into
the park. Residents can purchase one for $11.00 with their annual license plate
renewal. If you’re from out of state, the day use fee is $9.00. A small price
to pay to have a puptastic time with your pooch!
