Overview

Now Fresh is a Canada-based pet food brand by Petcurean. Owners of other brands like Gather and Summit, Petcurean are known for their quality ingredients, high safety standards, and sustainable practices.

Now Fresh produces a limited grain-free dry cat food range made with natural ingredients, including real meat, fruit, and veggies. We highly recommend Now Fresh cat foods due to their ingredient quality and protein content. It misses out on a top rating due to the inclusion of some ingredients with modest nutritional value.

In this review, we’ll examine all of Now Fresh’s cat food offerings, as well as the brand’s history, recalls, and customer commentary. Let’s dig into our unbiased Now Fresh cat food review!

Now Fresh cat food product ranges and flavors

Now Fresh has just three kibbles for your feline friend to sample. These recipes are all variations of the same turkey, salmon, and duck-based recipe — each formulated for a different life stage. All three of these recipes feature boneless as the first ingredient and don't contain meat meals, by-products, or soy.

If your cat is sensitive to grains or fillers, you'll be pleased to know that Now Fresh recipes are free from gluten, wheat, corn, and other grains. The use of traceable ingredients ensures both sustainability and the safety of your furry companions. Each recipe is available in 3, 8, and 16-pound bags.

Let’s take a closer look at each recipe.

Now Fresh Kitten Dry Cat Food

Kitten Turkey, Salmon, & Duck Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

This recipe is an excellent choice for kittens, pregnant queens, and lactating mothers. The second ingredient is egg, a great source of protein, healthy fats, and DHA, which is vital for the neurological development of young cats.

The next three ingredients are peas, potatoes, and potato flour. Peas are high in protein and fiber; however, they're not complete proteins and can be used to raise the protein contents of cat food without providing the same benefits as meat. Potatoes have low nutritional value to cats and are high in carbs.

This recipes also includes live probiotics and EPA, an essential fatty acid that supports the immune system and promotes joint health.

With over 36% protein as dry matter and 22% fat as dry matter, this recipe provides the energy that growing kittens need for development.

Now Fresh Adult Dry Cat Food

Adult Turkey, Salmon, & Duck Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

The first five ingredients in the adult recipe are boneless turkey, peas, potatoes, whole-dried eggs, and pea flour. It's fairly similar to the Now Fresh's kitten recipe, but with slightly less protein (34% as dry matter) and fat (19% as dry matter).

Like the kitten recipe, Adult Turkey, Salmon, & Duck includes natural produce as secondary ingredients, like blueberries, carrots, tomatoes, and even papayas, to provide a natural source of vitamins and minerals. It's also fortified with additional vitamins, chelated minerals, and probiotics, and is free of artificial preservatives, flavors, or dyes.

While we'd prefer not to see peas and potatoes as top ingredients, Now Fresh Adult Turkey, Salmon, & Duck dry cat food is overall excellent quality with an above-average protein content — highly recommended.

Now Fresh Senior Dry Cat Food

Senior Turkey, Salmon & Duck Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

As cats age, they typically require a lower-calorie diet. Lower activity levels and a slower metabolism can lead to weight gain and increased stress on your cat's joints. Fortunately, Now Fresh’s senior recipe retains the same flavors that kittens and adults enjoy but is tailored to meet the complex needs of senior cats.

Like Now Fresh other cat foods, this senior recipe has the same top five ingredients, backed up by the same blend of natural produce, which includes apples, pumpkin, and broccoli

It includes ingredients like cottage cheese and lean proteins, boasting above-average protein (33% on a dry matter basis) and near-average fat (15.5% as dry matter). This recipe is enriched with antioxidants, minerals, and probiotics, along with L-carnitine to support heart health and energy transport.

Overall, Now Fresh Senior is a outstanding pick for purring pals that are getting a little long in the fang.

Why Wag! likes Now Fresh cat food

There are several reasons we gave Now Fresh a near-perfect 4.5-star review— below are some reasons this brand stands out among the others.

Premium recipes made with real meat

Now Fresh cat foods are of a high standard — they're all made with real meat as the top ingredient, which is highly digestible and an excellent protein source. Plus, they're made without grains — grains are a common filler ingredient in cat foods with little nutritional value.

Each recipe also includes a blend of nutrient-rich fruits and veggies, supplying your feline friend with a natural source of vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and antioxidants to help them thrive.

Eco-friendly practices

Now Fresh is committed to making products that are just as good for the environment as for your pet. This brand is accredited with the Pet Sustainability Coalition, are certified carbon-neutral, and align their business practices with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

According to their website, Now Fresh plans to make all their pet food bags almost 100% recyclable by the end of the year.

Buying Now Fresh supports animal rescue efforts

We love a company that gives back, and Now Fresh is committed to doing that! This company has a long history of donating to local rescues and relief efforts following natural disasters.

According to Business Wire, “Over the course of the last 20 years, Petcurean has donated more than 134,000 lbs of food, which amounts to approximately 509,000 bowls, supporting over 714 shelters.” Pretty impressive!

Quality control

Now Fresh has some of the most stringent quality control practices we’ve seen for cat food brands.

Not only are all the recipes produced in EU, FDA, and CFIA-certified manufacturing plants but the facilities batch test all of the recipes and conduct regular quality management audits both in-house and through 3rd party companies. Another way Now Fresh keeps pets safe is by using Near Infra Red technology to accurately measure the nutritional content.

Concerns & considerations

Even high quality brands like Now Fresh have cons. Let's look at some things to consider if you plan on switching.

Peas and potatoes as top ingredients

One downside of Now Fresh recipes is the use of peas, potatoes, potato flour, and pea flour as top ingredients. While these ingredients are preferable to grains, they still offer low nutritional value.

Peas are rich in protein, fiber vitamin A, vitamin C, and manganese, but are not a complete protein as they don't contain all the amino acids that cats need.

Limited variety

Now Fresh has a lot of things going for it. Unfortunately, recipe variety is not one of them. This brand has one single recipe flavor that is formulated in three variations for kittens, adults, and seniors. All the offerings center around the grain-free Turkey, Salmon, & Duck recipe, and it isn’t suitable for cats with poultry allergies.

No wet food offerings

You may want to look elsewhere if your kitty is a wet food snob. At this time, Now Fresh only offers dry food recipes. Many cats find wet food more palatable, and the extra moisture can help combat dehydration and urinary formations

It seems Now Fresh had a line of wet foods at some point and discontinued it. We are holding out hope that its wet food line will make a comeback!

What pet parents say about Now Fresh cat food

“One of our cats is a little pig kitty. Our 17 pound cat eats fast and gobbles down her food. We have tried several brands, because she has a tendency to throw up her food before it digests. Finally, the NOW brand seems to agree with her. We have been using it for two months and she has not thrown up once. Not sure if it is because the pellets a much smaller or it is completely grain free, but it works. Our male cat has never had a problem with any of the previous types, but he also loves this brand.”

“My CFA Champion American Shorthair cats both love this NOW FRESH dry cat food. Both girls are sensitive to chicken and chicken by-products. Switching to this bag was an excellent decision and well-worth the premium price. The girls immediately devoured it, and the small size was perfect for one girl with some missing molars. No more puffy eyes or runny noses and no tummy troubles!”

Now Fresh cat food history

Now Fresh is owned by Petcurean, a Canadian pet food manufacturer that has been in the industry for more than 20 years. Petcurean originated in 1999 as an idea between two friends who aimed to bring about change in the pet food industry.

Over the last two decades, Petcurean has grown significantly, transitioning from a small business based in Canada’s Fraser Valley to a global pet food brand with numerous sub-brands, including Go! Solutions, Spike, Gather, and, of course, Now Fresh. Unfortunately, there isn't much information about how the Now Fresh line came into existence or when it hit shelves.

Besides Petcurean's commitment to quality food and pet safety,  it has created initiatives to create more sustainable and eco-friendly products and make charitable contributions to various rescue and relief efforts. We are looking forward to seeing more from this brand in the future!
