There are concerns among scientists and veterinarians about the safety of grain-free diets for dogs. In July 2018, the FDA opened an investigation into the relationship between grain-free diets and canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). 

The study is examining case reports of canines on grain-free diets developing non-hereditary DCM. However, the study is concerned explicitly with dog foods that contain a high proportion of potatoes, legumes, pulses, and peas.
