Overview

Under the Weather is a unique pet care company that makes dog foods mimicking the plain chicken and rice you'd serve your pup when they have an upset stomach. These freeze-dried recipes are vet-formulated and made with human-grade meat to ensure your unwell woofer gets the best possible meal. But is Under the Weather right for your dog?

We give Under the Weather dog food a 3 out of 5 rating. It's excellent quality and made with only the finest ingredients. However, we can't rate it any higher than 3 out of 5 as it's not complete and balanced dog food — it's for supplemental feeding on a short-term basis only.

Overall, Under the Weather dog food is an excellent choice when your dog is sick, but it shouldn't be a part of their daily diet as it doesn't contain adequate nutrient levels.

Read on for our full Under the Weather dog food review, where we'll closely examine its ingredients, nutrient levels, recalls, and more.

Under the Weather dog food product ranges and flavors

Six supplemental Under the Weather dog foods and a huge range of supplements for specific health needs, from allergy to joint to anti-anxiety supplements, are available.

Under the Weather dog foods aren't "complete and balanced" as they don't meet any of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutrient profiles. Under the Weather dog foods are for supplemental or intermittent feeding only.

Under the Weather Chicken & Rice Freeze-Dried Bland Dog Food

Under the Weather Freeze-Dried Bland Dog Food

All Under the Weather Freeze-Dried Bland Dog Food recipes are grain-inclusive, with white rice as the number one ingredient in all recipes. It tops the list as it's tasteless and high in fiber, which helps with both constipation and diarrhea.

The second ingredient in each recipe is whole cuts of freeze-dried meat, followed by pumpkin powder, glycine, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. The two bone broth varieties include bone broth instead of pumpkin powder.

Pumpkin powder is commonly used to treat upset stomachs in dogs — it's rich in fiber and vitamins E, C, and riboflavin. Glycine is a non-essential amino acid that supports healthy digestion.

Potassium chloride and sodium chloride, which is simply table salt, are added to improve taste. Potassium chloride also has some health benefits — it's a source of potassium and helps with fluid balance to prevent dehydration.

The Turkey, Oatmeal, Sweet Potato & Slippery Elm recipe is especially for dogs with pancreatitis. It contains slippery elm, which is rich in mucilage, helping relieve irritation associated with pancreatitis.

One of several reasons Under the Weather dog foods aren't complete meals is they don't contain enough protein or fat. For example, Under the Weather Chicken & Rice Bland Diet For Dogs contains only 14.4% protein and 2.2% fat as dry matter. AAFCO guidelines for adults state dog foods should consist of a minimum of 18% protein and 5.5% fat as dry matter.

Why Wag! likes Under the Weather dog food

Human-grade meat

All Under the Weather Bland Diet recipes are made with only minimally processed human-grade meat and limited ingredients, ensuring they're as easy on your dog's digestive system as possible. Only the highest-quality dog food products include human-grade meat as a main ingredient.

Convenient meals for upset stomachs

Rich in fiber and made with only a handful of ingredients, Under the Weather Bland Diets are ideal for helping soothe your pooch's stomach for a few days while unwell.

If you're super busy and don't have time to cook up your own chicken and rice meals, Under the Weather is an excellent alternative. Bland Diets are available in three primary flavors if your pup has a meat protein allergy or sensitivity.

Long shelf life

Under the Weather freeze-dries its dog foods to preserve nutrients and extend their shelf-life considerably. With a three-year shelf life, you can keep these supplemental meals on hand for the next time your pup feels out of sorts.

Concerns & considerations

Not complete and balanced dog food

The main downside of Under the Weather dog food is they're not complete and balanced meals you feed your pup on a daily basis. They're advertised as freeze-dried dog foods, which could mislead some pet parents who don't closely read dog food labels.

You should only feed your dog Under the Weather Bland Diet recipes for two or three days, or as long as your vet instructed, before switching them back to their regular diet.

On the pricey side

Under the Weather is outstanding quality but pretty pricey — especially considering it isn't complete dog food.

At the time of writing, a multi-pack of three 6-oz bags of Under the Weather Freeze-Dried Dog Food costs $37.95 on Chewy, at $2.11 per oz. It's worth noting you'll need to rehydrate each meal, so it'll make considerably more food, but it's still a bit costly.

No grain-free options

Under the Weather offers no grain-free options, which isn't an issue for most dogs but means they're unsuitable if your dog has a grain allergy. That said, studies suggest grain allergies only affect around 2% of dogs.

What pet parents say about Under the Weather dog food

"Was introduced to this by my friend when my schnauzer wasn't feeling well. Bought it and he loved it. He devoured it and felt better after a couple of days being on the food. Definitely would recommend it if your four-legged friend isn't feeling too hot."

"My dog willingly ate the food, and I didn't have to cook chicken and rice for her. My other dog who was not having any problems was looking for crumbs when she was finished. He didn't find much."

Under the Weather dog food history

Kyla Sternlieb founded Under the Weather in 2012. She was inspired to launch Under the Weather by her experiences with her dog Ruffy the Wheaten Terrier.

When Ruffy had stomach issues, Kyla struggled to juggle her busy schedule with caring for Ruffy and preparing him bland food. This experience with Ruffy was her light bulb moment — why won't pet stores stock pre-made bland meals similar to homemade chicken and rice?

Soon, Under the Weather began making its Bland Diet recipes before expanding into supplements for various health concerns and conditions.

Under the Weather manufactures all its products in the USA. Its headquarters is located in Williston, Vermont.
