The perky French Bullhuahua dog breed will inherit traits from both of his parent breeds, the adorable French Bulldog and the tiny Chihuahua. Typically, the dog breed hybrid will be stocky with a wide chest, muscular body and long legs. His head will usually be proportionally larger than his body and will include dark eyes, big ears and a short, broad muzzle. While small, the French Bullhuahua is usually fairly active and is the perfect package of cuteness. He may exhibit some independence but will be loving nonetheless.

French Bullhuahua Breed History

The French Bulldog originated in England as a small Bulldog who was company for trade artisans. Bred with small Terriers and the Pug, this dog was called the Bouledogue Francais when he arrived in France along with the artisans who moved there during the Industrial Revolution.

The French Bulldog became very popular, though much later during the Great Depression of the 1920s and 1930s, the French Bulldog, like many others, suffered in number. Thankfully, recovery did occur and the breed was registered in 1989 by the American Kennel Club. They are a very popular breed today. The Chihuahua is thought to be an ancient breed. There are several theories as to the origin of this tiny dog. One theory is that the breed was first developed in Egypt 3,000 years ago. Another thought is that the Chihuahua had origins in China and was traded throughout the world by Spanish traders. A third theory is that the Chihuahua came from Central and South America, descending from the Techichi dog, a small canine considered to have healing powers and spiritual use. This dog was placed in the beds of the ill and was also cremated and buried with those who had passed on, in the thoughts that the dog would smooth the path to the other side.

French Bullhuahua Breed Appearance

The French Bullhuahua is a small dog and can vary quite a bit in size, depending on parental influences. His weight can range from 10 to 30 pounds and he will stand between 6 and 12 inches tall. With a short, smooth coat, his appearance can also vary from pup to pup even within the same litter, dependent again upon the specific traits that he inherits from his parents.

The French Bullhuahua can be seen in a variety of colors, which include black, black and tan, brindle, brown, cream, golden, merle, speckled, spotted and white. The head is often larger than the body in proportion, with large dark eyes that may bulge somewhat. His ears will be erect but can be the “bat-ear” look of the French Bulldog or smaller in size like that of the Chihuahua. The muzzle of your hybrid could be flat as seen in the French Bulldog parent or little and pointed like the Chihuahua’s. His tail will be small and may curve just a bit.

French Bullhuahua Breed Maintenance

The French Bullhuahua will have a short coat and won’t shed much, requiring minimal maintenance efforts. A slicker brush will be the perfect tool, gliding over your hybrid’s smooth and short coat, removing any loose fur. Bathing isn’t an issue unless your dog likes to play in the dirt, and even at that, a pet wipe will work quite well to clean the fur.

As with all small dogs, the French Bullhuahua will require a fairly regular teeth cleaning regimen. The teeth, being small and often crowded in the mouth, should be brushed daily if at all possible. If you start this part of the routine at a young age, your French Bullhuahua will not mind the brushing at all. The nails should be clipped every few weeks.

Insuring your French Bullhuahua as soon as “pawssible” is essential for preventing high vet care costs. Start comparing insurance plans from leading insurers like Healthy Paws and Embrace and save over $270 a year.

French Bullhuahua Temperament

The French Bullhuahua is an intelligent and very aware dog. Loving and affectionate, this hybrid can become overprotective of family members and so should be given plenty of opportunities to interact with people of all ages and with other canines. Doing so will allow your dog to be comfortable and confident, trusting his place in the family hierarchy. The parents of this hybrid dog breed both have a stubborn streak - your French Bullhuahua may take on this trait and be a little independent in nature and headstrong at times. Easily excitable, they are not a dog to bark excessively but may bark at visitors when they first arrive.

French Bullhuahua Activity Requirements

As a small dog, the French Bullhuahua does not require a lot of exercise. He may have little spurts of energy however, and there is no doubt that he’ll enjoy a promenade around the neighborhood once or twice per day. Trips to the dog park will give him the chance to work on his social skills with humans and canines alike. The French Bullhuahua may be sensitive to temperatures; if it is too warm do not allow him to over-exert himself, particularly if he has the brachycephalic facial features of the French Bulldog. This feature means that he may have trouble breathing if he gets too hot and out of breath.

My frenchie bullhuahua woody is an absolute love bug! He will snuggle with anyone and everyone, he craves attention! Hes so smart and learns at a very quick pace which makes training fun for both of us! When he doesnt get what he wants he can be a little snappy but as long as you are patient and dont react he is fine. Woody enjoys long and short walks and loves meeting new people and dogs. Hes friendly and only slightly scared of much larger very energetic dogs but as soon as their backs are turned hes chasing them from behind to play.

Winnie is amazing, she is so kind and caring and aware of my fluctuating health needs. She barely leaves my side. Incredibly loyal and alert. Can be over protective when we’re out the house and won’t take treats from anyone unless we’re at home so had some trouble training. She hates the rain. Adorable darling dog!

We rescued or girl from an animal rescue near us. She was said to be a chihuahua but we knew there was something else there as well. A DNA test revealed that she also has a trace of French bulldog which explains her size.
