The English Boston-Bulldog dog breed is a small to medium-sized lovable friendly dog that sports a solid stout body. A combination of traits from both the Boston Terrier and the English Bulldog parents results in a hybrid dog breed that is devoted to family, and a committed family member. They can be sensitive and don’t like being ignored or left alone too long. This hybrid dog breed enjoys chilling out with the owner and family, although they gladly join in a game of fetch the ball. They can suffer from exposure to extreme heat which can cause heatstroke, and they don’t like the severe cold. The English Boston-Bulldog is lively as a puppy, but slows down with age.

English Boston-Bulldog Breed History

The English Boston-Bulldog is a hybrid dog breed, a result of crossing the Boston Terrier with the English Bulldog. While the historical data is scarce for the new dog breed, we can study the parent history to determine what characteristics make up the English Boston-Bulldog.
The Boston Terrier came from selective breeding of the bull and terrier types and produced a small size dog. These tough little dogs were once pit fighter dogs, and they originated from Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the few breeds developed in America. It was in 1865 that coachmen employed by the wealthy began interbreeding the breed. The offspring interbred with the French Bulldog, providing the foundation for the Boston Terrier. The new dog was named after its birthplace and was formally recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1893.

A terrier only by name, the Boston Terrier has been bred to be gentler in nature than the pit fighting dogs of the past. The English Bulldog had its origins in the British Isles and is a descendant of the Asiatic Mastiff. It had a bloody past, being used in the sport of bull-baiting, where it would attack fully grown bulls in the fighting arena. These dogs were aggressive, ferocious and very courageous. With strong determination and total lack of fear, they would attack the bull from underneath. They got their name ‘bull’ from this tasteless sport.

Thankfully, today the Bulldog has a very different and mellow temperament from its ancestors, but it still retains some of the strong will and therefore needs a strong leader/owner. Today, the English Boston-Bulldog benefits from the build and courage of the parent dog history, but has become a mellow and lovable dog.

English Boston-Bulldog Breed Appearance

The English Boston-Bulldog is a solid, compact dog with a body that is well muscled, with a deep chest that is in proportion to the body size. Their limbs are straight and sturdy, with rounded paws. Their heads are often more like the Bulldog being large and again, solid. The muzzle is short with a broad black nose with wide nostrils and their cheeks are large. Their upper lip is quite large and folds over an undershot lower jaw. The eyes are deep-set and round, quite dark in color, and the ears are often thin and folded back. They have short tails that are carried low on the body. This handsome hybrid  has a lovely, glossy short haired coat.

English Boston-Bulldog Breed Maintenance

With an attractive easy-care coat, the English Boston-Bulldog requires minimal brushing and only requires bathing when necessary. Use a dog shampoo for sensitive skin as they are prone to skin irritations. If your dog has folds around the face or body, ensure these are dry and free from debris which can cause skin issues. The ears and eyes of this busy hybrid require constant checking to ensure they remain healthy and to clear any infection that may start. Gently wipe around these areas with a soft damp cloth, and dry the folds of the skin.

Train your English Boston-Bulldog when young to get used to having his teeth cleaned and brushed. This practice is easier to teach at an early age than when they mature. But with time, your English Boston-Bulldog will love all the attention and adapt well to routine grooming.

Insuring your English Boston-Bulldog as soon as “pawssible” is essential for preventing high vet care costs. Start comparing insurance plans from leading insurers like Healthy Paws and Embrace and save over $270 a year.

English Boston-Bulldog Temperament

This happy hybrid dog breed is a lovable, almost comical looking dog, known for its calm temperament and love of children. They are energetic puppies but mellow as they age. They are very affectionate dogs who are easy to maintain and don’t need a lot of room to live. Ideal in apartments, small homes and town or country, these sweet dogs will slot right into family life. Responding well to training, they listen to commands and obey orders. When training your English Boston-Bulldog they learn quickly, so expect fewer repetitions when training this dog. Be firm but kind in your instructions as some English Boston-Bulldog’s can be sensitive in nature. They respond best to plenty of praise and rewards, they are hungry for attention and affection.

Socialise your dog from its early puppyhood days with outings that bring it into contact with other dogs and people. They will enjoy a romp on the dog beach or at the dog park. This is where they can learn valuable skills about coexisting peacefully with other dogs.

English Boston-Bulldog Activity Requirements

When young, your English Boston-Bulldog will be lively and full of energy, requiring daily exercise and lots of game time. But as it matures you will find it will probably prefer lounging at your side. Even though they are happy with inactivity, it is in your dog’s best interest to still take him for a walk each day to keep them fit and flexible. This canine is sensitive to the climate, be aware that excessive heat can cause your dog heatstroke so ensure they have a cool place to chill out during summer heatwaves. They are ideal for apartment living because they are inactive indoors.

He loves to walk. He can do five miles in a walk.
Maxwell is a rescue and he missed his puppy socializing window and can be very reactive to other dogs. But he loves humans. And he has responded very well to training to desensitize him to other dogs. He is very smart. He is also a willful stubborn little beast, but I wouldn’t have him any other way. I totally appreciate his strong sense of self and how he commands a room. Physically he is so cute, that people stop me on the street all the time to tell me that. Like many bullies he has allergies that have cause some minor skin problems and he gets ear infections easily. I recommend the breed if you have a lot of energy and patience.

He loves his sibling (15-mo-old female Boston Terrier) but is hard to control when he meets new people or dogs because he just wants to play so badly. He weighs 35 lbs currently. Very affectionate and tender-hearted (feels bad when he is in trouble). He does learn quickly, is food motivated and loves every person and dog he meets.

Charlie is genuinely the best dog in the entire world. He is my baby, and he knows it! He is lazy, but gets super excited for car rides, walkies, and his rope!! He also loves begging for food. He has sensitive and itchy skin, but it's nothing we can't handle together

Beach frisbee, walking in the park
Gunner is a devoted, fun-loving family dog. He in on the larger side - 48 lbs. and still has ribs and a waistline! He tends to prefer people to other dogs. He is very active and athletic - fabulous at frisbee, passionate about swimming (although he had to be taught to swim as a puppy), ball, sticks, tug-of-war and any other "game" he can drag you into. Loves to share his toys and play with company, taking turns returning balls and frisbees to everyone in the room.

Acquired Yoda 7 years ago at 6 years old. Adopted from a shelter he immediately became a part of the family. House broken and loving he has always slept in our bed. I have acreage in northern Michigan and love to take him there and let him run. I bought a collar that lights up and put a bell on it so I can let him run and know where he is. As he gets older Yoda is slowing down, but so am I. I have never known a more affectionate dog and would never get anything but a Boston in the future.

This guy is the best! He can be bossy to other dogs. He likes to herd them. He will stand up to any dog but is terrified of fireworks. He really only barks when he’s outside and sees another dog or when the door bell rings. He makes the cutest faces and will stop anything he’s doing to let you snuggle all over him. He’s down for affection anytime. Also- he likes to be carried upstairs to bed... he’s my baby. He’s best friends with my 90lbs 7 year Old boxer. He’d never bite a human. He wants to please his people. He distracts us with his adorable little face all the time!

Coco is going on 6 now and is quite the character—she is very lazy now but used to be super energetic. She loves walks and seeing new things and often jumps into the car when she comes outside to greet us after a day out lol. Only problem is she gets really stinky very quickly no matter how often we bathe her and her skin is super sensitive so it’s a constant battle.

We have had our sweet Dakota for almost 8 months now. Totally in agreement with a lot said here- loves to be right by our side, cuddles every night (literally sleeps like a human on our bed!) and does not enjoy being alone for long. We frequent the beach and dog park, and she enjoys it. A big chewer and toy hog, but contributing that to her puppy age. Some slight food aggression if other dogs are around, but we are working on that with training. I love this breed and couldn’t imagine having a better companion!
