Overview

Summer’s here, and that means it’s time for new adventures with your pup! Whether you’re a local who’s looking for a weekend getaway or a first-time visitor to the Space City, Houston’s dog-friendly campgrounds make it easy to travel around the muttropolis with your four-legged pal. Here are five campgrounds in and around Houston that you and Fido shouldn’t miss!

#1 Westlake RV Resort

18602 Clay Road, Houston, TX 77084

For a comfortable RV experience, look no further than Westlake RV Resort. With quality amenities such as an on-site business center, fitness center, free Wi-Fi, swimming pool, and laundry facilities, it’s possible to go days without leaving this quiet, gated park. Canine guests must be leashed at all times, but can ditch the leash temporarily when inside one of the two dog runs. And if your pooch gets themselves dirty as canines often do, there’s a DIY dog wash station where you can give them a rinse before letting them back into your RV.

#2 Northlake RV Resort

1919 Humble Westfield Road, Houston, TX 77073

Despite being located in Houston, Northlake RV Resort provides a nice respite from hectic city life. This gated property offers a number of amenities including a stocked fishing lake, free Wi-Fi, free cable TV, exercise equipment, and outdoor fire pits. There are also two fenced dog runs for four-legged guests, plus a free dog wash station for cleaning off muddy paws. There’s plenty to do within the resort as well as in the surrounding area. Less than 10 minutes away by car are the Mercer Botanic Gardens, Cypress Creek Park at Timber Lane, and Timber Lane Hike and Bike Trail—all puptastic spots to explore with your mutt.

#3 Eastlake RV Resort

11802 Lockwood Road, Houston, TX 77044

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly campground in the northeastern part of Houston, you can’t go wrong with Eastlake RV Resort. Not only is this gated park conveniently located near shopping and dining, but it also offers a peaceful environment and topnotch amenities. Human guests have access to a swimming pool, jacuzzi, free Wi-Fi, and outdoor kitchen facilities, while canine visitors can stretch their legs in the dog runs and get clean in the self-service dog wash. If your pooch has some serious energy to burn, you can let them loose at the nearby Alexander Deussen Dog Park or hit the trails at the Sheldon Lake State Park.

#4 Lake Houston Wilderness Park

25840 FM 1485, New Caney, TX 77357

Just 40 minutes north of Downtown Houston is the lushly wooded Lake Houston Wilderness Park, where you and your urban pup can truly escape from the city and reconnect with nature. The 4,800-acre site boasts over 20 miles of dirt and natural terrain trails, making it a pawfect match for curious canines who love to explore and take long walks. And since it is a wilderness park, there’s a good chance that you and Fido will encounter wildlife such as hogs, raccoons, and snakes. Be sure to leave them alone and keep your furry buddy leashed for everyone’s safety. After working up an appetite, head over to the Peach Creek Overlook to enjoy a picnic lunch next to the stream.

#5 The Retreat

27514 Huffman Cleveland Road, Huffman, TX 77336

The Retreat is another furrific destination for when you feel the itch to get out of the concrete jungle. Situated on the shores of Lake Houston, this newly opened RV and camping resort is only less than an hour’s drive from Downtown, yet provides plenty of opportunities for city pups and dog parents to immerse in nature. Explore miles of walking trails, go kayaking, or just relax and take in the scenery with your furry BFF. All of the lodging options are pet-friendly, so you and Fido can either ruff it in a tent, sleep with AC in a luxury cottage, or have a unique experience in a retro RV or covered wagon. A bark park is also in the works so that four-legged guests can enjoy some off-leash time.

There’s no shortage of things to do with your pup in dog-friendly Houston. Check out these tips on traveling with your dog before you hit the road, and have fun with your best friend!
