The Nelson Lakeside Park is a great place for spending a beautiful day with family members both two-legged and four-legged. Take Fido for a scenic, leashed stroll around the park, and enjoy a waterfront picnic at one of the picnic tables scattered throughout the site. Nestled in the heart of downtown on the shores of Long Lake, this picturesque park also houses a public boat launch, fishing pier, swimming beach, and the Long Lake Veterans Memorial. Make sure your pup stays out of the water though, as dogs are not allowed to swim in the lake. For dinner, head to the nearby San Pancho Mexican Restaurant, where you can share an outdoor table with Fido.

Holbrook Park on Harrington Drive is a hub for active recreation, with a playground, ball field, half basketball court, hockey and pleasure skating rink, and warming house. During spring, summer, and fall, the ice rink is used as a dog park where canine members of the community can run and play off-leash to their heart's content. To access this seasonal off-leash area, dogs must have up-to-date licenses and vaccinations. Be sure to read the park rules that are posted near the entrance! If your pooch is not in the mood to socialize, take them for a leashed walk around Holbrook Park instead.

Located on Glenmoor Lane, this park offers walking trails, as well as multiple athletic courts, playground equipment, benches, and picnic tables. If your pupper is up for a longer walk, hit the Long Lake City Trail. Accessible from Hardin Park, the Long Lake City Trail stretches about 0.7 miles beside US-12. Following the trail will take you and Fido up to Wayzata Boulevard near the southwestern shore of Long Lake. Don't forget to bring enough water so you both stay hydrated and pick-up bags to dispose of pet waste properly.

The Susan E. Lurton Nature and Off-Leash Dog Park is a 39-acre site that has gone to the dogs, literally. With heavily wooded areas, nature trails, and expansive fields, this fully fenced park is excellent for enjoying the outdoors with your pupper in a safe environment. Since there's so much space for canines to romp unfettered, even high-energy doggos will be tired in no time. Note that annual passes are required to use the Susan E. Lurton Nature and Off-Leash Dog Park. Though it is located in Long Lake, it is maintained by the neighboring city of Orono; hence, passes are available at the Orono City Hall.

Adventurous pups are welcome to tag along with their humans on the Luce Line State Trail, a 63-mile-long trail that runs through the counties of Hennepin, Carver, McLeod, and Meeker. A former railroad grade, this trail is now used for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Remember to always stay on the right side of the trail, keep Fido on a leash, pack out all trash, and leave wild plants and animals alone. The closest parking is available on the west side of Stubbs Bay Road near Bederwood Park in neighboring Orono, about 3 miles southwest of Long Lake.
