West Sandstone
In West Sandstone neighborhood of Sandstone, the Lake Five Public Access Area’s nature preserve is a hidden gem. This quiet location is perfect for taking your fur-ever friend and doing some relaxing in the great outdoors. It is a beautiful, scenic area, perfect for photos. There are sandy areas, with piers for fishing, and many out-of-the-way areas where you and your pup can cool yourself in the lakes. Your pawtastic friend can be off leash throughout most of this nature preserve. Be sure to pack plenty of water, a leash if the need arises, and clean up mitts.

North Danbury
The St. Croix State Forest in North Danbury, Wisconsin, east of Sandstone, has a whopping 42,000 acres packed full of adventure for you and Fido. If you like to hike, you have 25 miles of different skill-level trails to choose from, most of them running along the Tamarack River. If you want to see some athletic dogs in action, there are 17 miles of dog sledding trails throughout as well. You can launch your boat and take your pup for a cruise, or just simply relax and enjoy a nice picnic lunch together. There are no facilities on-site, so plan accordingly.

East Hinckley
In the East Hinckley neighborhood, of the city of Hinckley, south of Sandstone, grab your pup-tastic friend and head to the Kettle River Scientific and Natural Area. Take your camera and binoculars as there are endless opportunities to capture stunning pics of the wildlife, and of course, your fur-ever friend.! This is where you and your pup can pick up the Kettle River Water Trail for an adventurous day of hiking. There are no facilities on-site, so plan accordingly. For a bit of relaxation, scoot over to the West Side Park Pavillion and enjoy its open space and picnic pavilion.

Grantsburg
Beginning in the town of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, southeast of Sandstone, is the pup-tastic Matthew Lourey State Trail. There are endless opportunities along this 80-mile trail for a fun day of hiking or an extended adventure. This is a multi-use trail which is open not only to dogs, but to horses, mountain bikers and snowmobilers. It passes through the Nemadji State Forest for additional outdoor recreation! As with all rural activities, it is important to pack plenty of water for you and your pawtastic friend. And why not pack a picnic lunch while you are at it?

Moose Lake
Just north of Sandstone is the city of Moose Lake, Minnesota. Here, you and your pup will have the best time hiking on the Soo Line South Trail, which runs Moose Lake south to Sandstone. These old railroad lines travel through the woods, across farming lands, and even past wetland areas, rich in wildlife. If that is not enough hiking, jump on the Soo Line North Trail, which heads northwest towards adjoining towns. This section of trails is flat, travels through shaded forests, and is perfect for all pup-abilities. Need a treat? Head to dog-friendly Dairy Queen and share a pup-sicle!
