Mitchelville Beach

Mitchelville Beach is a furrific beach on Hilton Head Island. You'll find its designated parking lot right off Mitchelville Road. Keep your dog on leash until you get down to the water, then let them run! 

Mitchelville Beach is a break from the Hilton Head Island's beach mold. It's a little rough around the edges. The other beaches tend to be smooth expanses of sand that end in neat crescents into the water. On the other hand, Mitchelville Beach is actually quite marshy. The water is shallow even at high tide, creating pockets of grass far out into the ocean. Its unique beauty appeals to those who don't want their vacation selfies looking too manicured. 

Mitchelville Beach's unique look results in two great reasons to visit. The first is the biodiversity that this salt water marsh brings. Wild birds nest in the grasses, and there are plenty of tide pools to examine for sea snails and crabs. If your dog loves following their nose, there will be plenty of interesting things to sniff! The downside is that the warm, shallow water is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. You're going to need your bug spray! 

The second big perk to visiting Mitchelville Beach is that it's less popular than the other beaches on Hilton Head Island. If you want to visit without having to fight for your space in the crowd, this is the beach to visit. It's especially great for off leash play for your dog. Fewer people means fewer distractions, so you can be confident that your dog is under voice control at all times. Make use of the beach's facilities here. There's a restroom and a sand shower if you need to hose off yourself or your dog before hopping back in the car.

Mitchelville Beach will have your dog saying "Sniff, sniff, hurray!"
