Located on the banks of the Mad River in Six Rivers National Forest, Mad River Campground is well worth checking out if you're searching for a primitive campsite in northern California. Set in thickly forested surroundings, and with the beauty of Ruth Lake just a couple of miles away, this dog-friendly campground welcomes leashed pets and offers a peaceful camping experience.

Reservations aren't available at Mad River Campground, with sites offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Designed for tents and RVs, all sites get their own fire ring and picnic table, and the cool river waters are within easy reach. However, hookups aren't available.

If you're searching for a campground with hot showers and a few other creature comforts, this probably isn't the spot for you. You'll find drinking water and vault toilets on-site, but not much else.

Leashed pets are permitted in Mad River Campground, but as usual, you'll need to make sure you abide by all posted rules when staying here. These include cleaning up after your dog at all times and taking care to ensure that your pup isn't a nuisance to other campers.

One of the main attractions of Mad River Campground is its privacy. While some other popular campsites nearby can get a little crowded at times, this secluded spot is often a whole lot quieter and more laid-back. And it's budget-friendly, with a nightly rate of just $12.

That said, all the attractions of 7-mile-long Ruth Lake are just 2 miles away. A favorite spot with water sports enthusiasts, the lake boasts a marina and is popular for fishing, swimming, and boating. A two-lane boat ramp and a courtesy dock are available, while the marina also has a store with fishing and boating supplies should you need to stock up.

If you'd rather stay closer to your campsite, the Mad River itself is also a great fishing spot for anyone keen to hook a trout or two. Most sites sit adjacent to the river in shaded terrain, and the densely forested surroundings make this a peaceful spot to just sit back, relax, and enjoy your pooch's company. Check it out if you're ever in the Ruth Lake area of Six Rivers National Forest.
