Located on the banks of Mad River, this dog-friendly campground is a great place to camp with your friends, family, and your doggo! The Mad River campground is just two miles south of Ruth Lake. It’s a perfect getaway surrounded by the forested mountains of northern California where you can camp for up to two weeks at a stretch.
Mad River Campground is located on the banks of its namesake river that overlooks shrubs and oak trees. Along with thick forests, the campground is also capped to some extent with Douglas fir trees, under which you can relax on a summer’s day.
There are multiple sites for individual campers as well as groups. Most of the sites are right along the river. While you have to reserve most of the campsites, some of them are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Each site has a table and a campfire ring. Drinking water is usually available. but it is better to carry some of your own. There is also a picnic area as well as grills if you want to barbecue.
Activities are plentiful at Mad River campground. If you’re an angler, you will have a great time catching trout in the Mad River. Campers also get access to the river for swimming and boating (rental boats are available). There is a hiking trail where you get some exercise and also get in touch with nature. If you take Fido for a walk, be sure to carry a poop bag to keep the place clean.
The massive Ruth Lake is just three miles south of the campground. You can also visit the Six Rivers National Forest as well as the Redwood National Park. All in all, Mad River Campground is a great summer camping site, especially if you want to spend a few days with your canine friend far from the madding crowd.
