Houston, Texas is a furbulously dog-friendly city, as evidenced by its collection of parks that puppers can enjoy, on-leash and off. Just west of downtown and tucked into the northern corner of the newly built, one-quarter acre Avondale Promenade Park, the resident dog park is a great spot to exercise your dog without a leash.Â
Avondale Promenade Dog Park's compact 1,000 square feet are covered in paw-furiendly artificial turf, which is easy to keep clean, and is gentle on those precious paws. Here, Fido can meet and play with new friends while you relax on a bench to oversee the canine fun. A hydrant invites fur babies to sniff and explore, and trees create a shady haven. While this leash-free pocket park may not be ideal for greyhounds and other sprinters, it’s ideal for fur babies to get to know some other furry friends safely without leashes in this fully fenced area.
A multiple-use fountain keeps everyone thirst-free, but it may be a good idea to bring along a bottle or two of water just to be prepared. Also, remember to bring dog waste bags, so you can be mindful of others and pick up after your pooch. City-provided trash receptacles stand ready to receive your used bags.
Free street parking is available, and the park is within walking distance of some furbulous dog-friendly eateries. As in all Houston dog parks, a few petiquette rules should be kept in mind. Your fur baby should display current city license and rabies tags, and be polite with other doggos. Leave Fido’s favorite treats – and your own – at home. Kids under 12 aren’t allowed into the puppy park, but there’s a small fenced playground adjacent to the dog area where they can hang out where Mom or Dad can see them.
If you and Fido are looking for a neat little dog park, look no further than the Avondale Promenade Dog Park! Grrreat things come in small packages!
