If you and your pooch live in Indianapolis, you’re probably aware of how dog-friendly it is. The city runs a variety of paw-some bark parks, and a fur-vorite place for dogs and humans is the Gordon Gilmer Canine Companion Zone at Eagle Creek Park. Also called simply Gordon Gilmer Park, this dog park offers all that doggos and their parents would want in a doggy playground. Whether your pup is a nose-to-the-ground explorer or a wound-up furry ball of energy, this dog park is for you. And it’s so big there won’t ever be overcrowding!
Once at the dog park, which is on the east side of Eagle Creek Park, you’ll find ample free parking. The flat, paved path to the entrance is wheelchair accessible, and a double security gate keeps everyone safe whether coming or going.
Named after a longtime city councilor, the park’s entrance displays a sculpture portraying Mr. Gilmer’s beloved Yellow Lab, which speaks to his work to make Indianapolis dog friendly. The very large, grassy open field is surrounded by sturdy fencing, and both large and small dog areas feature agility runs. One end of the park runs along a section of woods that offers shade. There’s also a shelter for folks who want to get out of the weather, and benches line the fence.
To gain access to the dog park, you’ll need to purchase a "pooch pass". A daily pass is just $5 and a yearly pass costs $75 for one dog, but you can add a second or third dog in the household for $37.50 each. Passes are prorated later in the year. You'll also need proof of rabies, bordetella, parvo, and distemper vaccinations to purchase a pass. Or get a VIP pass which gives you access to 3 other dog parks in the city too!
Inside and outside the fence, you’ll find handy waste bag dispensers and receptacles to make picking up after Fido easy. Remember to bring water, as there is none available, and toys are okay, too. Just be sure your fur buddy is prepared to share. This is only one of the dog park etiquette rules that keep everyone safe and happy. Please don’t smoke, eat, or drink alcohol while in the dog park, and leave the dog treats. And above all, treat the other dogs and humans politely.
For a barking good time, plan a visit to the fur-bulous Gordon Gilmer Canine Companion Zone soon!
