Description

The Logan Square Dog Park, officially called Park No. 556, is a great place for urban canines with urbane sensibilities. The small crescent-shaped park is nestled against the Kennedy Expressway overpass in the Logan Square neighborhood, but don't let the offbeat location fool you. This spot is bursting with amenities for discriminating dogs and dog owners.

While the park does have some shade trees, the most charming scenery is found on the overpass itself. A pawtastic mural stretching most of the park's length depicts loving scenes of happy pups and their owners frolicking among the butterflies. Look closely and you'll see the names of park visitors painted into the mural, some next to portraits of them with lolling tongues.

You might find yourself envisioning your own dog on the mural as you watch them romp with new friends behind the fence. The off-leash area has a separate section for small dogs, benches where humans can rest, doggie drinking areas, and two secure double-gate entrances. In the summer, friendly folks put out a puppy pool where water-loving dogs can go get waterlogged.

Despite the less-than-pastoral scenery around the park, this is a friendly, comfortable place where pups and their humans greet you with happy smiles. Logan Square Dog Park was only built after a coordinated community effort and people continue to invest in it. There's a Facebook page you can join and many community events and fundraisers are held in the park.

Do note that while there are patches of grass around the dog park, there are no grassy spaces inside the fenced area. Most dogs seem to adapt well to the asphalt and gravel surfaces, which are kept clean and keep your dog clean when they get wet. Dogs that prefer eliminate on the grass will appreciate you taking them to one of the park's grassy spots on a leash. Just remember to clean up after them. You'll need to bring your own clean up bags and deposit them in the trash cans on the other side of the fence.

If you're looking for a place where everyone learns each other's names, come to Logan Square Dog Park. You're sure to make lots of new friends here.
