Overview
Gather is a new, revolutionary pet food brand. Its offerings might be slim, with only two recipes, but its business model and formulas help it stand out from the pack.
One thing that makes Gather unique is it's one of the only brands that offer vegan dog food. Vegan dog food tends to get a lot of hate since dogs are considered primarily meat-eaters, but unlike cats, canines can thrive on a vegan diet. In fact, vegan diets are one of the few nonprescription options for dogs with severe meat protein allergies.
Overall, we rate Gather dog food a faultless 5 out of 5 paws up due to its ingredient quality, eco-friendly business practices, and protein-to-fat ratios.
But is Gather right for your dog? We've performed a deep dive into this brand to help decide a good fit for Fido. Read on for our complete, unbiased Gather dog food review.
Gather dog food product ranges and flavors
Gather Dog Food has just two dry food recipes at this time, their vegan recipe Endless Valley™ and their meat-based Free Acres™ Recipe.
Both Gather dog foods are "complete and balanced," meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutrient profile guidelines for maintenance (adults).
Gather Endless Valley
Endless Valley Vegan Dry Dog Food
Whether you're a meat-free household or your pup has a meat allergy, Endless Valley Vegan dog food is a good vegan dog food option.
This organic, pea-based recipe is moderate in protein (24.4% as dry matter) and is low in fat (12.2% as dry matter). It also has a relatively high fiber content thanks to the addition of grains like barley, oats, quinoa, and flaxseed. This recipe is fortified with vitamins and chelated minerals to meet your canine's dietary needs. We particularly like that Gather has chosen to go with chelated minerals since the chelation process helps with nutrient absorption.
Between its macros and the calorie content (385 calories per cup), this food is on par nutritionally with most traditional dog food recipes, the only exception being that it contains no meat or dairy. We love that Gather sources organic produce from a Canadian association of local family farmers for their recipes. This adds to ingredient traceability and also supports small businesses.
Since this recipe is primarily pea-based, some may be concerned due to the 2018 FDA investigation into the connection between diets high in legumes and acquired dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. While this is something to be conscious of, research has since come out that legume-based diets are likely not the culprit of this phenomenon.
Gather Free Acres cat food
Free Acres Organic Free-Run Chicken Dry Dog Food
If your dog isn't sold on converting to veganism, you'll be happy to know that Gather offers a meaty option, too. Gather Free Acres recipe centers around organic chicken, lentils, and peas for extra protein and fiber. Plus, the added fish meal and berries provide fatty acids, and antioxidants to boost your dog's immune system and keep their coat shiny.
Since it is free of corn, grains, gluten, soy, and GMOs, it's a solid choice for dogs with sensitive tummies. At 33% protein*, 17% fat*, and just 399 calories per cup, this recipe's macros and ingredient quality is quite impressive.
True to it's name, Free-Acres recipe is made with organic, free-run chicken produced by Miller Poultry out of Indiana and Michigan. Miller Poultry's birds are produced on one of 180 family-owned farms, and birds are raised in large barns rather than cages.
This producer has received numerous food safety and animal welfare certifications and abides by the Global Animal Partnership (GAP) standards for the humane treatment of their poultry.
Like the Endless Valley recipe, Free Acres uses organic seed oils, lentils, and other ingredients sourced from Farmer's Connect, a collection of Canadian family farmers.

Why Wag! likes Gather dog food
Here a couple of reasons we give Gather a flawless 5 out of 5 rating!
Protein allergy-friendly vegan recipe
Gather's Endless Valley is one of the few commercially available feed options for dogs with meat protein allergies. Typically, dogs with protein allergies would have to eat a hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein diet, which is only available by prescription only. These new vegan foods are opening up a world of possibilities for pups and we're here for it!
Ethically sourced proteins
We love to see companies embracing ethically sourced animal proteins like Gather does. This brand has partnered with Miller Poultry, a US-based farming corporation that has 180 separate family-operated farms. Their business model prioritizes small flocks and going above and beyond the industry standards to make their operation as humane as possible.
Miller farm chickens are free-run, which means they are never in cages, and their organic birds also get outdoor time as well. Likewise, the Krill for their Free Acres recipe is sustainably harvested by Aker BioMarine, a Marine Stewardship Council-certified company. This company uses Proprietary Eco-Harvesting™ technology to prevent fishermen from accidentally harvesting the wrong species.
No controversial ingredients
Gather is very conscious of what it puts in it's recipes, and you will never find artificial additives, dyes, genetically modified ingredients, or low-quality fillers (like wheat, corn, or soy) in their foods.
Eco-friendly standards
We only get one planet, and we are happy to see companies like Gather taking steps to protect it! Gather is taking steps to reduce waste and preserve natural resources, including:
- Protecting biodiversity
- Limiting the amount of water they use for production
- Using eco-friendly packaging
- Relying predominately on renewable energy sources to power their office.
Transparent ingredient sourcing
Gather lists all its suppliers right on their website, from the barley down to the fish meal. Having a small circle of trusted suppliers helps with quality control and ensures a consistent product.
Concerns & considerations
Here are a few things to consider before switching your four-legged friend over to Gather dog food.
Limited options
Currently, Gather dog food only has two recipes, and both are dry foods. We are crossing our fingers that they will release a line of vegan and meat-based wet foods and some specialized dog food recipes, including puppy, senior, and weight maintenance formulas.
Pricey
High-quality products often come with a high cost to match, which is true for Gather products, as well. A 16 lb bag of Gather dog food is around $92, which puts it on the more costly end of the spectrum for dog kibble.
Limited availability
Currently, Gather Dog Food is only available for purchase on Chewy or Amazon. We hope their products will be available in big box stores in the next few years!
What pet parents say about Gather dog food
"My dog loves it. He has a mouth allergy, and some commercial forms of minerals are carcinogens. This the cleanest, most sustainable, balanced/healthiest vegan dry food I could find. He never has any gas, poops are always firm, he always does a happy dance when I put his food into a puzzle for him then hide the puzzle. Even visiting dogs like it."
"We have tried almost every vegan dog kibble there is and this one is my dog's and mine absolute favorite! He loves the taste and I love the organic ingredients! So if you want the best for your dog, this is it :)"
"35+ years of feeding our rescue dogs vegetarian and mostly vegan kibble & canned. Obviously, the number of choices have grown over the years, but we tend to stick to the tried and true. Gather Endless Valley is new to us, however. We gave it a try, and our two seniors like it very much! Each kibble piece is small, but I also add a little warm water since there has been some teeth lost along the way of their long lives."

Gather dog food history
Gather Dog Food launched in 2016, but their parent company, Petcurean, got it's start nearly 30 years ago, in 1999. Petcurean was born in Canada and made its mission to provide its furry consumers with all-natural diets.
Petcurean's "pets first" business model also applies to their other brands, Now Fresh, Go, and Summit, which, like Gather, are free of genetically modified ingredients and artificial additives. Petcurean has even enlisted the help of experts in pet health, including a nutritionist with a doctorate in pet nutrition, to oversee the recipe formulations.
Gather, launched with three recipes: Wild Ocean, Free Acres, and Endless Valley, all of which were produced in their Canadian facilities. However, it has since discontinued the Wild Ocean Recipe. Gather is still produced locally in Canada and available in premium pet retailers in Canada but only available for purchase through Chewy and Amazon in the US.
