We give Wysong dog food a 4 out of 5 rating due to its high protein content and overall ingredient quality. It misses out on a higher rating because of the high fat content in some recipes and its lack of foods for all life stages.

Wysong serves up wet, dry, and freeze-dried dog foods, as well as a range of supplemental meal toppers.

Aside from Epigen canned foods, all Wysong dog foods are "complete and balanced," meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutrient profile guidelines for adult maintenance or growth.

Original Diets is Wysong's standard, grain-inclusive dry dog food range. Each recipe is fairly good quality, with real meat or meat meal as the first ingredient. Apart from Anergen, all recipes list poultry within the top five ingredients — not ideal for dogs with poultry allergies.

Wysong Original Diets uses brown rice and oat groats as the main grains in each formula. Brown rice is one of the most nutritious grains used in dog foods. Brown rice is high in fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese.

Other common secondary ingredients across the range include flaxseed, peas, and dried beet pulp. While dried beet pulp is often considered a filler, it's a minor ingredient.

One unique variety is Wysong Original Diets Vegan. It lists brown rice, corn, extruded soybeans, pea protein, and potato protein as top ingredients. We don't recommend you feed your dog a vegan diet, but this recipe might be a good option if your dog has severe food allergies.

The protein and fat ratios in Wysong Original Diet dog foods are excellent. For example, Wysong Original Diets Adult dry dog food contains above-average protein (33.3% as dry matter) and near-average fat (16.6% as dry matter) compared to standard kibbles.

We recommend Wysong Original Diet due to the use of real meat within the top five ingredients and its superb protein-to-fat ratios.

Epigen is Wysong's starch-free range, made without grains. Chicken meal or organic chicken top the ingredient lists. Instead of rice and oats, these recipes are made with potato protein and meat protein isolate, which are low in carbs but packed with protein.

The overall quality of these recipes is high — they include a couple of lower-quality ingredients like dried tomato pomace and dried beet pulp, but they're far down the list.

With 10% carbs, Wysong Epigen dry foods have outstanding protein and fat percentages. Wysong Epigen dry dog food is high in protein (66.6% as dry matter) with near-average fat levels (16.6% as dry matter).

Wysong Epigen recipes are great dog foods with high protein and low carb levels — highly recommended.

Wysong's premium dog food range, Optimal, is meant to be more genetically appropriate for dogs, with fewer carbs, more natural fatty acid sources, and high probiotic levels.

All recipes are grain-free, with peas and sweet potatoes as the main fiber and carb sources. Sweet potatoes are nutritious for pups and are high in iron, vitamin A, potassium, and more. Aside from that, the ingredient quality is similar to Wysong's other kibbles, with meat or meat meal as the first and second ingredients.

One stand-out feature of Wysong Optimal dry dog food is its protein-to-fat ratios. Wysong Optimal Adult formula contains high protein (46.6% as dry matter) and near-average fat (15.5% as dry matter) compared to your typical canine kibble.

Overall, the Wysong Optimal range is superior to Original Diet and well worth splashing out on if it fits your budget.

Wysong Organic wet dog foods feature 95% organic meat, with real cuts of chicken or turkey as the top ingredient. These recipes only contain a few organic ingredients, which is misleading given their names. 

Wysong Organic Adult features sweet potato, natural flavor, blueberry, and organic barley in the top five ingredients. Wysong Organic Senior lists brown rice as the primary grain, followed by natural flavor, blueberry, and organic barley grass powder.

It's great to see blueberries as a top five dog food ingredient — they're rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber.

One downside of Wysong Organic wet dog foods is they're high in fat compared to their protein content. Both recipes contain 36% protein as dry matter and 28% fat as dry matter. As a result, they're not the best choice for inactive dogs or pups prone to weight gain.

Epigen is Wysong's largest canned range, with six flavors available. Wysong Epigen wet dog food is not complete dog food; it's for supplemental feeding only.

It's a varied range made with novel animal proteins like rabbit and duck, which are good options for pooches with meat protein allergies. All recipes comprise only five ingredients: meat, water sufficient for processing, natural flavor, organic guar gum, and mixed tocopherols.

With limited ingredients and protein contents of 40% as dry matter, Wysong Epigen wet dog foods are a good addition to your dog's diet.

Wysong Archetype is unique as it's complete and balanced food for adult dogs and cats according to AAFCO guidelines. Each recipe is made mainly from real cuts of meat, followed by natural flavor, taurine, organic blueberries, and organic barley grass.

Each recipe consists of around 12 main ingredients, including nutritious produce like chia seeds, broccoli sprouts, carrots, and plums. Chia seeds are highly antioxidants, while broccoli sprouts are loaded with sulforaphanes, which reduce inflammation.

Wysong Archetype dog food's protein and fat contents are good, but the chicken formula is a little high in fat for our liking, with 45.8% protein as dry matter and 36.4% fat as dry matter.

Wysong serves up two freeze-dried meal toppers: Pure Meats and Optimize. Pure Meats are made with 100% freeze-dried meat — perfect if you want to give your pup a protein boost.

Optimize food toppers are suitable for dogs, cats, and even ferrets. Aside from meat, each recipe includes green-lipped mussels, cheddar cheese, and monterey jack cheese.

Green-lipped mussels are a popular supplemental ingredient, as studies suggest they reduce joint inflammation and symptoms of osteoarthritis. Other secondary ingredients include various mushrooms, like shiitake, which boost immunity and fight cancer.

All Wysong dog food recipes list a real cut of meat as the first or second ingredient. Using real meat in dog foods - especially kibbles - is a sign that it's a high-quality brand. Real meats are highly digestible and nutritionally complete compared to animal by-products and by-product meals.

Wysong dog foods - especially Epigen and Optimal dry foods - have outstanding protein-to-fat ratios. Premium recipes can contain anywhere from 40% to 65% protein as dry matter, fuelling your dog's active lifestyle and helping them maintain a healthy amount of muscle and fat.

Wysong produces foods for specific health needs and lifestyles, like Performance for pups that don't stop running and Fundamentals for pooches with food allergies and sensitivities. This excellent selection of foods means it's easy to find the perfect fit for your four-legged friend.

Some Wysong foods, like Restore and Archetype, are complete meals for cats and dogs, which is great if your pets love to share food.

Wysong dry dog foods include some low-quality manufacturing by-products. Aside from their high fiber content, dried tomato pomace and dried beet pulp have little nutritional value to dogs. That said, they're minor ingredients, coming in outside the top eight ingredients in most recipes.

Meat meal is also a top ingredient in many kibbles. While meat meal is high in protein, it's highly processed and cheaper than real meat. We prefer to see real meat as the top ingredient in dry and wet dog foods.

While Wysong Organic wet dog foods are high in protein, they're also high in fat. Both recipes contain 28% fat as dry matter, which is above average for canned foods. This fat content is especially an issue in the Senior recipe — older pups need less fat in their diets, as they're prone to weight gain.

All Wysong dog foods are suitable for either adult maintenance or growth according to AAFCO guidelines. As there are no recipes for all life stages, you'll need to switch up your pup's diet as they age.

Wysong states its foods are made in-house in the Midwest. The company's headquarters are in Midland, Michigan.

There have been no Wysong dog food recalls in the last 15 years as of March 2025.
