Dog Areas in Seawillow

Seawillow is a small, unincorporated community in central Texas. Home to just 100 residents, it’s very small and doesn’t have much to offer dog owners other than around ten vet clinics within 20 miles of town. However, there are several larger cities nearby that are packed with dog-friendly activities!

Just 20 miles south of Seawillow is Palmetto State Park in Gonzales, TX. This large park is well-maintained by the Lone Star State, and thanks to its proximity to several water sources (including the San Marcos River), it’s an oasis for flora and fauna. There’s a $3 admission fee, but you and Fido get access to fishing, rafting, and any of the park’s eight trails, which range from .15 to 1.25 miles in length. Just keep your pooch on a leash, and you’re good to go!

Zilker Park can be found 45 minutes north in Austin, TX. This wide-open park is a fun place for both dogs and humans; there’s even a leash-free area for pups who love to run! The park runs alongside the Colorado River, and there’s a nearby limestone pool that’s pup-friendly below the dam (Barton Springs). Complete with volleyball courts, drinking fountains, picnic tables, and public restrooms, it’s easy for you and Fido to make a day out of a trip to Zilker Park.

Although Seawillow is small, several nearby towns and cities have a lot to offer. Don’t miss out!

It is true that San Marcos is a 45-minute drive from Seawillow, but the drive is well worth it! There are so many fur-friendly things to do and see that you could easily make a day of it.  Rio Vista Park is the very first place you should stop and visit. The whitewater area is pawfect for Fido to take a dip in the water without his leash. So come on down, make a splash and cool off, because we know it gets hot in Texas. Whenever he isn’t splashing in the water, Fido needs to be kept on his leash.

Memorial Park is a great family park that is just 45 minutes outside of Seawillow. There are a lot of things for you and your dog to do together here! You could bring Fido’s leash, go for a walk around the area, and take in the beauty of nature. Or you could take his leash off and go to the fenced area so he can run, play, and make some new fur-iends. The fenced in area is large enough to play fetch in, so don’t forget Fido’s ball! Cleaning stations with bags and trash cans are available to make those necessary cleanups a little easier.

Are you ready to tackle a new form of adventure? It’s time to grab your dog and go tubing together! It’s a 45-minute drive to the access point from Seawillow, but Lions Tube Rental is very fur-friendly. Jump in and go down the river in style. It is recommended that you put shoes on Fido, or place a tarp underneath him, because the last thing you want to do is pop your tube while you are going down the river. When you get to the end of the ride, there are taxis available that will allow you to ride back with your dog!

It’s high time you let your dog run wild and free just like nature intended. Get in the car and drive the 45 minutes over to Purgatory Creek Natural Area. If you have even spent a single day in Texas during the summer, then you know why it is called Purgatory Creek. You will see 40-foot canyons, wide open meadows, scratchy grassy areas, thickets, and a flood control dam. Fido can run and play off leash as long as he listens well to your commands. It is a truly unique experience, so don’t forget to bring a camera to capture the precious moments you’ll spend here with Fido.

It will take you a little less than one hour to get down to Austin from Seawillow. Don’t let that discourage you from visiting Onion Creek District Park, though. This is an off-leash walking trail that allows Fido to roam with you. Please be aware that this a wide open area with no fences to keep you from exploring the day away, so if your dog isn’t well-controlled with voice commands, he could get lost. Come watch Fido splash in the creek, sniff trees, and chase the falling leaves through the park. It is an adventure like no other!
