Mchenry is located in the upper right portion of Illinois and is home to a few Fido-friendly places and spaces! Prairie Trail is a nature trail that is 26.5 miles in length. This trail starts at the Wisconsin border and continues around farms and woodlands into the far-flung Chicago suburbs in the south. Along the way, it upgrades from gravel to asphalt and passes through eight communities, where you’ll find food and drink, as well as numerous parks and conservation areas. Your dog will need to stay on-leash on this trail.
Dogs are welcome at Windhill Pancake Parlor, where you and Fido will find three pet-friendly tables outside. Fido will have to stay outside and guard your table while you head inside to order your meal, as there's no table service. They dish up a menu full of breakfast favorites, including baked apple pancakes, Belgian waffles, eggs in a basket, and apple pie crepes.
Culver's offers a few outdoor tables to dog owners. Its menu is made up of premium chicken dishes, sandwiches, hearty soups, fresh salads, and its signature ButterBurgers. A drive-thru window is also available if you don't want to leave Fido at the table outside while you go in to order.
Martin Woods is one of the few neighborhoods in Mchenry, Illinois. This area provides a good combination of housing and rural charm. The neighborhood has a popular dog park, known as McBark Dog Park, that features four acres of space for your dog to run off his leash. You’ll need a pass from the city that must be renewed annually, and then your dog is free to roam! The neighborhood also has its own PetSmart and PETCO stores, where you and your dog can visit for all of his necessities. You can even visit The Shops at Fox River for some window shopping with your leashed pup.
Bull Valley in Woodstock, IL is about 12 miles away from Mchenry. This area is home to a conservation area, a country club, a golf club, and much of the town’s favorite residential and shopping areas. At Bull Valley Dog Park, your pup will have plenty of room to play in the seven acres of the park. And the park features special events for you and your pooch through the year! You can also enjoy some dog-friendly eateries, like Ethereal Confections, which has outdoor tables for you and your dog and serves up some of the areas favorite sweet goodies.
About 15 minutes away from Mchenry is the neighborhood of Veteran Acres in Crystal Lake, IL. Crystal Lake is one of the biggest cities in the county, and Veteran Acres is one of the most popular neighborhoods, complete with plenty of shopping and dining opportunities and its own beautiful park. The Veteran Acres Park welcomes leashed dogs to join their owners for some outdoor exploration. The neighborhood also has a Banfield Pet Hospital, one of the most trusted pet hospital companies in the country. Ringwood is just over 5 miles north of Mchenry, IL and is a mostly-rural town with no distinct neighborhoods. You won’t want to miss taking your dog to Glacier Park in Ringwood. This gorgeous conservation area has open fields, water, and fun hills to explore, and you can easily spend the whole day hiking with your four-legged friend through the prairie. There’s even the Prairie Trail, which is part of the Rails-To-Trails organization, which runs through Glacier Park and packs in over 26 miles of walking trail and pawsome scenery. Your dog is sure to have a ball in this neighborhood!
Lake Geneva, WI is about 30 miles from Mchenry, IL and is a gorgeous town situated on Geneva Lake. The town is only about 6 square miles large and doesn’t have distinct neighborhoods, but is quite dog-friendly. Here, you can rent a boat or camping equipment at Clear Water Outdoor for you and your pup to enjoy. Paws for Treats is another pup-ular hot spot, featuring a huge selection of doggie treats, toys, and more. If you want to dine with a view in Lake Geneva, head to Scoops, a popular ice creamery and deli that sits right on the Geneva Lake and has a dog-friendly patio.
