Bergheim, Texas has an interesting origin story. The original settler, an Austrian man named Mr. Engel, escaped here to avoid military service. He built the cotton gin, which attracted more settlers. Just one year after Mr. Engel built the cotton gin, he named his new settlement "Bergheim", which is German for "home in the hills".
The cotton gin eventually became the Engel Store, which created jobs and breathed new life into the area. The store is still open, and has since been renamed Bergheim General Store. It's on the top 6 list of historic general stores that you should include on your bucket list, so be sure to stop by with Fido!
