Chicago has been named the sixth most dog-friendly city in the U.S., a significant improvement over the previous year’s tenth place. One reason may be that the city has created more leash-free parks, especially in its southern districts. Three new doggie playgrounds in the Bronzeville neighborhood were completed in 2018 - 2019 and Bronzeville Dog Park #592 is one of them.Â
Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, this pocket park is where dog people can find off-leash play for their pups within walking distance of their homes. For those that drive, there’s street parking nearby. A formerly empty lot has been transformed into a tidy, manicured space with enough room for doggos to work off their zoomies, socialize, or just explore with their noses. Lucky doggy parents get to meet other local dog lovers, too. Wee pups even have their own section to avoid run-ins with the bigger dogs.
The off-leash area is surfaced with easily maintained paving brick, asphalt, mulch, and artificial turf. Two water fountains slake everyone’s thirst, and benches scattered inside the fence encourage dog parents to keep an eye on their woofers’ behavior while taking opportunities to pick up their dogs’ poop. A waste bag station and disposal bin are all within easy reach, so there’s no excuse for ignoring this universal dog park rule. Thoughtful pet parents will bring a few of their own bags, just in case. Several well-placed trees offer shade from the summer sun, but sunscreen is a good idea for both you and your fur baby.
The city’s parks department requires that all dogs visiting the park wear three tags: a city registration, a rabies tag, and a DFA (Dog-friendly Area) permit tag. Participating veterinarians throughout the city can provide the DFA, a written permit that should be carried by the pooch’s parent. The cost is $5.00. Females in heat, and puppies less than four months old should be left at home, and children under 12 must be with an adult.Â
